Exploring Political Systems

Read the following instructions and complete the two activities. These were developed by a friend of mine, Mr. Thielmann, over at DP Todd.

Activity One
Purpose: find out what kind of political views you have and how they compare with world figures and political parties

Instructions:
go to http://www.politicalcompass.org/
read the instructions and complete the quiz
read through your results page to learn about your views
summarize what you learned from the quiz by commenting in response to this posting on the course blog -- http://www.soc11eh.blogspot.com

Tips:
left vs right: left-wing usually means more government control over industry and economy; right-ring usually means less government regulation and intervention (laissez-faire)
authoritarian vs libertarian: authoritarian means powerful government which controls rights and freedoms, sometimes it can be a dictatorship; libertarian means less government control of rights, sometimes less government in general

Activity Two
Purpose: learn about different ways of organizing nations by politics, economy, and values

Instructions:
go to http://www.nationstates.net
read the introduction and sign up to “build” your nation
experiment with the simulation for as long as you need to see how it works, more if you have the time (warning: NationStates can be addictive!)
summarize what you learned from the simulation by commenting on this posting on the course blog -- http://www.soc11eh.blogspot.com

Tips:
See how the choices you make at the beginning affect the kind of country which is generated by the simulator. Look at other countries and issues around the “world” to see what others have done.

I learned that I am a left-wing Libertarian. I always thought that I was more right-wing, but I guess not. My dot on the quiz result graph was in the same area as Ghandi and the Dalai Lama. I believe that we should have rules, but rules that help and protect everyone, not just the rich. The questions were hard to understand, they should take out some of the harder terms, or put in examples.

According to the political compass test, my results came out to say that economically, we should help eachother out. I believe that everyone should have their own choice, and make their own decisions with rules included, more or less good rules that everyone agrees on. I think people should have individual freedom. My results ended up being around Nelson Mandela and The Dalai Lama. I think it's sweet that I have the same beliefs as Gandhi!!!

I liked taking this test.
And I'm happy I don't fall under the same category as hitler.

I learned that my political beliefs are very similar to Ghandi's but a little farther left and a little lower. I think this was an interesting quiz to learn where you stand in your political preferences.

So after the quiz I found out that I am Economic Left/Right -3.88, and Social Libertarian/Authoritarian -1.18.
So apparently I believe in sharing with everyone, and that everyone should help themselves wwhenever possible. I came out close to Ghandi, so i guess thats alright.

I ended up as being well into the left-wing and libertarian area. My country in NationStates appears to be essentially anarchist.

So I'm more in the area of having rules however there should be individual freedom. I think we should help other people out because often you can't control your financial situation. I also think that people shuold be free to be unique and do what they want to do. It's your life and you're the one living it. Not what everyone else thinks you should do. The freedom to do what you want to do is what makes people unique. I personally don't like ti when people are forced to do the same thing as other people. Everyone should have the right to be unique and be the person they want to be. Not what their friends or parents, or other people want them to be. They shuold be THEM because that's what THEY want to do.

Some of the questions were interesting, others I found kind of stupid. The art one I was odd but the one about school made me think. Everyone would probably says that school should not be mandatory, but when you think about it, what would happen if peopel didn't go to school? It would be quite chaotic with no one knowing anything, no jobs, to careers, etc. That question personally made me think.

On the political compass test the results said that I was slightly on the the left-wing libertarian side but I didn't really understand some of the questions so I think I might have answered against my true opinion because I think I a am a little on the right-wing. My dot on the graph was very close to dead centre but I was nearest to Gandhi.
My NationStates resulted in a socially progressive nation with a strong economy but a breakdown of social order has led to a rise of order by biker gangs.

I am a left-wing Libertarian. I was almost at the bottom of the page for the Libertarian part, I don't know if that's good or not...but what ever. I was kind of close to the Dalai Lama, but I wish I was closer to Ghandi because I totally believe in his ideas and the whole non-violence pacifist sutff. Anyways, I'm not surprised that I'm left-winged Libertarian because I'm kind of strange and like new ideas and what not. I like the test.

According to the political compass test, my results on the grid came out to be the Authoritarian Left. I thought that my results were going to be more on the Liberitarian Left;however, I think my results meant that sharing good fortune of wealthy people can help each other out to make better life for everyone! Also, I believe that freedom and making its own desion is very important as well as believing in good rules which can lead the society stable.

My result came up with left-wing Authoritarian. I think the result is almost as same as what I thought. I believe people should share and help each other economically. However, politically, there must be some rules that can control people. Too much freedom would make a mess.

I learned many things today about the political spectrum. Before today, I had a general understanding of the political spectrum, but not too far into the details. I have always been very left wing in my beliefs, and what I have learned today strengthens my opinion of the left wing. My results on the survey showed that I was a solid left-wing libertarian. I was down there with good, caring people such as the Dalai Lama, Nelson Mandela, and Gandhi. I am happy to be on the opposite side of many people who I disagree with (George W. Bush, Hitler, Saddam Hussein). My Nationstate (The Empire of Burnaby Samson) has a strong economy, and a superb amount of personal freedom. Ideas such as gay marriage, drug legalization, and abortion are supported in my nation. I believe that personal freedoms are very important, and I am against many right wing beliefs such as support for traditional values, punishing offenders, and including religion in the state. Including religion in the state is not a good idea, because if a country like Canada were to adopt a Christian government, there would most certainly be an uproar from those of other religions, or atheists. I support religious freedom, the freedom of speech, and most of the other personal freedoms advocated by left wing parties.

I also dislike the Conservative belief of preserving the best in society. It is clear that the rich are getting richer, and the poor are getting poorer. Continuing to oppose changes will make the gap between rich and poor grow even larger.

Anyways, enough of my rant. I enjoyed learning about this topic, and I found the quiz very interesting. The graphs showing where many well known politicians are was surprising. There appeared to be many of these politicians in the "Facism/Neoliberalism" quadrant. Some of the questions were tricky, especially when it came down to more complex ideas about the economy. I found it hard to decide whether artists, writers, or musicians were more important than the modern day businessman. I strongly support the arts, but much of it couldn't happen without the business behind it. I am looking forward to what we will laern in the future.

And I am the only one who is tempted to go back to their Nationstate?

I found that I was quite close to the Pope VI! I find this quite wierd. I guess I believe in capitalism and I am a bit fascist but not to the extreme of hitler. Also I found that the nation simulation quite fun. It teaches us a lot about how the government works although there are some joke countries like The rival nation of Chuck norris. It also has the world assembly I was quite impressed. I learned that it is not easy controlling a nation with so many people with a lot of different views.

Well, I learned that I am very left wing, and very libertarian, exceeding -6 on both scales. I have always known that I am more left wing (very communist, actually), but I had never measured this, or my state from libertarian to authoritarian, and I am glad to be more libertarian. My country is just starting up, named CT1 (as in Communist Test #1), and I intent to play the game for some time.

So apparently I am a left winged social libertarian... Along with half the class. I think the quiz was interesting but had too many big words in the questions. I also thought it was cool that they showed where Ghandi, Hitler, etc. were in the spectrum.

4/5 thumbs up for this activity.

According to the political compass test, my results were both slightly left and slightly libertarian. I agree with my results.

Well...according to a bunch of random questions which had no maybe buttons and I only understood two thirds of them it seems my beliefs are the same as Ghandi...He was a great man and did many great things but my beliefs are totally different. I think satyagraha doesn't solve the real problems of the world and that we need structure in order to be strong and advance in this world. Freedom to me is not having the choice of who runs your country it's the choice of how to run your life and maybe in that way i'm like Ghandi. But even now I still haven't decided how i really stand on things in order to stay safe do you have to give up freedoms. Is democracy the closest we'll ever get to controlling our own lifes. I would give up my safety to keep my freedoms but i'd give up my freedoms to keep my friends and family safe.

I ended up being very close to Pope XVI(If thats the right roman numeral), so I might go and discuus political views with him in the future. As for my nation it is very small, rich and has very potent army. My nation collects a lot of taxes and the tax rate is 28%! We should do more activities such as this one.

So after taking the quiz I found out that I am a left wing libertarian. So I guess I believe in sharing with the economy which is ok. I am also close to Ghandi which is pretty neat too. I thought the quiz was interesting but some of the statements and questions were a little hard to understand.

The survey that we did today in class I found quite interesting. Some questions were easy to answer, while others were confusing, and some I had no idea what they meant or were talking about. So I just basically guessed on those ones based on the key words in the phrase. That may have altered my outcome if that was not the hoice I would actually make in real life. I think they should take out questions that are hard to answer, or at least give an example or something of what they mean. And I also think that they should put in a "Neutral" button because on some of the questions they asked I couldn't make my mind up on, so I just randomly chose either "Agree" or "Disagree". With that being said, I was pretty much in the middle of the table or chart or whatever it is. For the Economic Left/Right I was -1.75, and for the Social Libertarian/Authoritarian I was 0.82. I think that this result is pretty typical for me. I agree with what it came up with. I am more of a person that likes the government to control things rather than the nation deciding together because chaos may ensue if different people don't agree on something. With the government in control the people of the country can't really do anything but go along with the plan. And I believe that I am more of an Authoritarian because I like structure and a sense of control over things, but I am not a perfectionist (although some of my friends say I am). When I looked at the chart to where past famous/infamous people were standing, I found that I wasn't really close to anyone. I was just by myself. Which is probably the most logical because I was basically half and half.

Ps. I don't really like any type of world government. It's all the same in the end. Men fighting over power.
Oh! And my NationStates thing! My republic of Puppy-killer is a tiny, pleasant nation, renowned for its burgeoning boxer population. The quiet, industrious pop. of 5 million are fierce;y patriotic and have great social equality. The large government juggles the demands for education, law & order, and social welfare. The average income tax rate is 24% (is that alot to pay), but the wealthy pay a much higher tax. Crime is relatively low in my nation.
And thats about it! Hope you enjoyed reading Mr. Lewis! =)

i thought this test was ok but at the same time it really needed a nuetral option because somethings i really didnt care one way or the other. i got the results of being closer to ghandi but kinda far away because i beleive an eye for an eye... but at the same time if someone kills another person then the person who kills the murder must also b killed and then the human population would end fast... but other wise i think people should all be treated fairly unless they break severe laws.
jk(not just just kidding)

I'm the Pope!...
according to that quiz i took.
I think some of the questions were hard to understand and so therefore I dont think I answered ...some correct. Maybe more than "some" :s
But I do believe in a lot of rules and I try to follow them as much as possible.
But all-in-all I think I could just make the rules.I think that would be awesome!!

I learnt that I am close to Ghandi on the political spectrum. Although I was more right, and a a tiny bit more fascist than him, putting me close to the middle! I guess this means im kind of in between more government regulation and less government intervention. I found this quiz very interesting in all the questions and results.

I tihnk its important as a politician to be more towards the middle. this way your helping everyone more then just the rich or just the poor. i found that i was stationed a little to the left but i was almost in the middle. the graph compared me to ghandi which is a good thing, better then being compared to hitler
