Canadian Art and Entertainment

This weeks Blog discussion has two parts:

Part A: The 1920's say the coming of age of Canadian artists with the Group of Seven gaining international recognition for their images of the rugged Canadian landscapes. Since this time Canadian artists, musicians, writers and performers of all types have continued to gain international recognition for their work. Today Canadians such as The Tragically Hip, Mike Myers, Leonard Cohen and Jim Carrey are household names throughout the world for their work in the arts and entertainment industries.

Who is your favorite Canadian artist (this includes musicians, actors etc) and how do you think their work gives Canadians a sense of national pride?

Part B: The twenties in Canada saw an upswing in the economy that meant Canadians were searching for was to spend their "extra" money and fill their leisure time. As a result the 1920's gave birth to a number of "fads" that became wildly popular only to pretty much disappear in a few short years. Take a look at the following video to get a better sense of 20's entertainment.
The Flappers
The Jazz Age

What types of popular activities today do you think may turn out to be just "fads. Personally, while they called the 1920's the Roaring Twenties, I think they may end up calling the 2000's the iPod 2000's.

Do not forget to finish your post with your initials and the period of your socials class or else I cannot give your credit for your response.

Activities today that might turn out to be fads are: video games, mp3s, different types of clothing, and trading cards.

My favorite Canadian singer is
Eva Avila. I think that being the winner of Canadian Idol in 2006 shows that she represents national pride.

Part B:
I think that ipods are definatly a fad. But over all I think technology is a huge part of teens lifes. I would say that cell phones are bigger than ipods. If they were to do a stat I would say that at least 1/3 teens have a cell. Text messaging is the biggest form of communication for teens. MSN would be the next biggest, every way that teens communicate today involve technology. The 2000's may end up being called Age of the cell phones.

I personally have no favorite artist, I do have a few favorite music artists, but they are japanese and have little or no relation in canada...

The new fad of today, would be known as the Technical Era, technology is barely at it's peak and continues to grow, ipods get smaller and carry more music then one person really needs, cellphones although make and take calls are slowly but surely losing their purpose and are being used for things far from making calls like listening to music, taking pictures, and watching videos, the era that is slowly growing and will become the new fad, will continue to grow and grow until humanity is consumed by it's own creation, kinda like the Matrix... there is a fifty-fifty chance we will be able to live normal lives when the Era of technology reaches it's peak.

My favourite canadian actor is Tommy Chong because he is the sweetest hippy ever. He gives canadians national pride because he is a successful at being a loser and gives other losers hope. I think one of today's fads are guitar hero as lame as that is, it'll end up disappearing soon though.

Bryan Adams and Emm Gryner are the best Canadian artists. They are singers who proudly bring there music out for us. Canadians need recognition for there music just like Americans. Bryan Adams being the better known of the two...
They both give us, as Canadians, wonderful artists and a proud feeling to say, 'those are our artists.'
Having a Canadian artist that is worldly known is a great feeling for Canadians because we can be recognised as more then just hockey loving outdoors types. (though I don't mind that too much.)

Fads for our time will be things such as; headphones with wires. They will make something that is wireless and that will completely wipe out wire headphones. Or portable DVD players. Ipod videos will completely take over that front soon.

Jim Carrey is one great Canadian Actor. I have to say he is y favorite because he is in many movies such as, The Grinch, Ace Ventura, Number 23. He is a great success in the acting business. I hope he is in more great movies to make Canada proud.

I think that i-pods and mp3 players may be a new fad because you see everyone with them. listening to their music while they are playing sports, or riding the bus, or doing work and everyone i know has one. It is the fad of 2000.

My favorite Canadian would have to be well i don't got one. But I do have a couple favorite bands from Canada: Mariana's Trench, Faber Drive, and Three Days Grace. They haven't done anything significant, but I like the music :-P. Things today that are basicly just fads are: iPods, MP3s, game systems (PSP, PS3, XBox360, Wii...etc), Certain fashions (the "emo" look).

the age of technology. ipods are increasing popular in todays world and I am lead to believe that that will never go away. But the fad will never change it is one circle that never ends.
fashion-will always be the "fad" being skinny-wearing tight clothes-emos-peircings-smoking and drugs-are fads of today. Ignoring is cool-asking questions is dumb- following the crowd and failing is smart. yah well Ill never be like you. Im Bex. I want to play soccer and be in my band. i want to be different. I want to pass my classes- I hate those who drop out. People who fail make me sick. I hate drugs and Im never going to smoke.

Video games have been around longer then your parents could probably remember....

but the whole thing with the little add-ons like cameras, skins, sheet like that. It's unneccessary but 1st world earthlings love it. that's more about materialism though......

Part B:
Activities and things that will more than likely turn out to be fads include such things as ipods, cellphones. Cellphones have become very popular ever since they added in the text messaging and the Music players in thm. MSN is a very popular thing for teens these days. It lets you chat ad make plans with friends throughout all over the world. You can now even get MSN on your cell phones. This is the techonology age so many items such as the few named will become fads soon enough.

Personaly I think that not many activities are fads, its just that as you get older you slowly grow out of things. Things that are fads right now are things like certian "fashion statements"....if thats what they want to call it, and certain looks, sucha s the emo fad or the gangster fad. The more fads you follow the more you look like everyone else,a dn then youi just look dumb.

Like his Austin Powers movies he plays 3 characters or more. That is talent.

Part B:
I think that the 2000's are the age of cellphones. Almost every teenager has one. Text messaging is so popular. Teens favourite thing to do on a cell phone is text. I think msn is also very popular. My favorite famous Canadian is Leslie Nielsen, he is a good actor and his movies always make me laugh. Actors and singers give Canada a sense of pride because they do their best so that people can enjoy themselves, either watching one of their movies or listening to their music.

I think cell phones and ipod's are the biggest fad's for today. Almost everyone has them. Not long ago everyone had MP3 players, now everyone has ipod's. Soon something newer and better than ipods will come out and instead of ipods everyone will have them.

I really appreciate Mike Myers, Jim Carrey, Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling as great actors of Canadian heritage. Mike Meyers, and Jim Carrey for one are legends in their own right. Even though Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling are young actors, they have already proven to be amazing talents, and all that combines in giving Canada an even bigger sense of national pride.

I think everything popular at one point turns out to be a fad. Phones, pictures, texting, ipods, all have phases, then on to the next thing so to speak. Something new and improved is invented everyday. Even though I'm sure we will move on from all the latest technology, some things might stick.

Who is your favorite Canadian artist (this includes musicians, actors etc) and how do you think their work gives Canadians a sense of national pride?

My favourite Canadian artist is Jim Carrey, because I like his funny movies, but when I say the truth I didn't know before he was canadian. I think it's bad for Canada's "Publicity" that everybody thinks all those famous people were American. In Germany, I think, almost nobody knows that Nickelback, Sum 41, Avril Lavigne,... is from Canada.

(B)
What types of popular activities today do you think may turn out to be just "fads. Personally, while they called the 1920's the Roaring Twenties, I think they may end up calling the 2000's the iPod 2000's.

I think that everything improves so fast today that there will maybe not be one special name like the Ipod 2000's but maybe something like "years of great improve" because all this "new" technical stuff is after two or three months old and slow.
But as a fad (i'm not realy sure what it means) I think the Ipod is a good example and maybe the super fast internet, now everybody wants to have it but it will become very normal.

Incase your not aware Streethearts a pretty big band, Kenny Shields represents Canadian talent.
I think websites like myspace, facebook, you name it are all a big fad. It's mostly a teenage time passer, but sadly my own mother and grandmother have also joined the boat. I have many favorite Canadian musicians and actors. One of my favorite canadian bands is Three Days Grace, thirer music really appeals to me. Seeing them in an interview they are very down to earth and proud to be from Canada.Alot of the their music is controversial but they arent afraid to write about what actually happens in some peoples lives and what they have been through. I also like Sam Roberts. He shows a definite pride in his country. Billy Talent is also another band that i like. Alot like Three Days Grace they write and sing about the problems that some teenagers go through in high school and suicide which can really have an affect on teens these days.

Part B
This day and age would be the advanced way of communication and technology. We have ipods and music players that are very small and some can hold up to 30,000 songs, plays videos, and hold pictures. She gives Canadians a sense of nationalism because she is so talented, people go 'I know of her! She comes from my country!'.

The biggest fad of today must be the 'crocs' extremly hideous, and extremely useless.

Part A:
My favorite canadian artist is Bryan Adams. He is a singer, songwriter, guitarist, and photographer. Bryan Adams was Canada's most successful rock artist of the 1980s. Bryan participated in major humanitarian and political events such as Live Aid, the Amnesty International Conspiracy of Hope Tour, Rock the World (for Greenpeace), and Freedomfest.
Part B:
I pods arent really a fad. just because they are constantly being improved. Everyone has one and they are continuing to get better and better. adding new things, making them smaller, thinner. I think they are going to be here for a while.

Canadian actor Jim Carrey is a personal favorite worldwide and a great example for Canadian pride. This actor/performer has gone so far in his career and gained so much recognition all around that he is a proud representative for our country.
I find it very interesting how much trends go in and out of style. They getso wrapped up in peoples mind that they will do anything to get in that "fad" and spend ridiculous amounts of money. I am curious to find out what the next trend will be in 20 years from now; what kind of fascinating invention they will come out with that everyone and their dog will want one. They may eventually call our decade of the millenium (2000's) the "technology advancement decade". Because so many new electronics have been made and added to over the past to make them better and more efficient in the last 5 years.

My favorite Canadian is Pauline Johnson because she wrote poetry and ballads about her people. She faced discrimination against the European society. Pauline became a very popular, famous, legendary figure in Canadian history. The songs she sang and the poetry she wrote was only about her people.

My favourite canadian actor is Mike Myers because he is a talented and hilarious actor. He plays in movies like Austin Powers, Wayne's World and Shrek. Mike Myers' work gives canadians national pride because in movies he can play more than one character and not many actors/actresses can do that successfully. He helps the world appreciate Canadian Arts and Entertainment more.
Activities from today that might become fads will be video games like X-box and cell phones.

A. My favourite Canadian actor is Seth Rogen because he is an amazing actor. He's starred in many films and has successfully completed them. He is also well known for his stand-up comedies, and television series. For a Canadian actor, Seth has come a long ways with his career and we definitely can't wait for more of his great work.

B. I believe iPods are and will proceed to be the major fad of the 2000's. Technology continues to grow day by day, as do iPods. They become smaller, more compact, and are able to occupy more space for music, videos, and games. In my opinion, the iPods and iPod phones will be the key fad of the 2000's.

Part A
Kevin James LaBrie is one of my favorite Canadian vocalists who is the lead singer in a progressive metal band called Dream Theater. The band is well known for the technical proficiency of its instrumentalists, who have won many awards from music instruction magazines. Dream Theater's members have collaborated with many other notable musicians. Dream Theater is one of the most actively bootlegged bands in the progressive metal genre. Since their very first gigs in New York as Majesty, fans have recorded almost every single show that Dream Theater have played, and some very elaborate and professional recordings have been released. This band is recognized universally and their talent gives Canada a strong sense of metal pride.

Part B
There are many activities today that may turn in to fads. iPods may be replaced with another device just like ghetto blasters were replaced by iPods. However, people will always listen to music, that’s a fad that will never go away. I think it’s ridiculous that people compete by spending tons of money on 80 gig iPods, who is ever going to listen to that much music in there life. This has become a fad of the 2000’s along with divorce, abortion, same sex marriage, the capability of the internet and cell phones. I do believe that eventually these things will go away or become less popular in our society.

Jim Carrey, he's a grand actor, and very funny. Many people know he is a canadian, and im proud to have him represent our country.

I think our clothing is changing all the time. Skinny jeans are coming back from the past, so i thin our next step is to copy the 90's.
I dont thin iopds are gonna be a fad as they keep coming out with newer and better ones, and hey lets face it everybody wants their music
