We have recently watched the documentary Shake Hands with the Devil chronicling Romeo Dallaire's experience in Rwanda as commander of U.N. Forces. Respond to the documentary considering the following questions.
Romeo discussed images, what images stood out for him? Which images stood out for you? Why did these images stand out? How can images be powerful? What emotions did Romeo experience? What events lead to these emotions? What emotions did you feel while watching this documentary? What events lead to your emotions? How can your emotions be translated into actions? Should Canada make its involvement in these types of conflict more of a priority and send more troops and resources?

The only images that really stood out to me were the ones where there was dead bodies lying around everywhere and people had to step over them to get anywhere. The place they stayed looked and seemed a lot like a concreation camp.

images that stood out to him were, how things have changed and things were different then when he left, images stood out for me were all the people piled up and stuff, becuase that is horrible, he experienced emotions of depression and he blamed himself, these emotinos were lead by him leaving rwanda how it was, i fealt angry because no other countries were helping, my emotions can be translated by helping and stuff , i think canada should have sent alot more troops and helped out romeo cuz he kept on sending back reports and still no one helped.

The images that stood out for romeo were the piles of bodies. The images that stood out for me was also the piles of bodies. Images can be powerful because they could tell stories. Romeo felt like he couldn't do anything. I felt horrible because I don't know how people could just try and exterminate other people. The thing that affected me the most was when they would put chopped up bodies in the drinking water. Canada should help with these types of conlflicts because they are just as important as us.

Romeo Dallaire remembered all the graphic deaths of all the people that he seen slaughtered in Rwanda and the images of the body's stood out for me. Images can be powerful because "a pictures worth a thousand words". I wonder if some of those images were shown at the UN conferences during the genocide in Rwanda they might have sent more troops because of the impact of the images. Romeo seemed very deeply scarred by the experiences he had there and even after watching the movie filmed ten years later i will never get those images out of my mind. Canada should definitely send more troops, but they should be there to help and keep the peace.

The whole thing in Rwanda was horrible. Images that stood out at me were how many dead people were laying on the sides of the streets and the memorial house with all the skulls.(Many were children) Those images could be used to show people what actually happens in Africa. It could show them that Africa does matter. It was horrible in how many people died. It was horrible with the killing and the violence. My emotions towards these actions was upsetting and depressing. I can't even imagine being there. It must have been terrible for Romeo, I think I couldn't get over all of what happened there.

He was upset because of the things he saw and that nobody would do anything about it. i personally felt sad for these people, tey didnt deserve somting like that and as really pisses me off is that Canada did nothing. i understand things like this more ten other people do my dad is a canadian peacekeeper and the fact that people who have trinning did nothing to help these people. the one image that stood out the most for me was the one of the litle boy trying to help up the dead little girl, its sad that the children had to pay for this as well as the adults. i personally hope that next time if somthing like this happens again places who could have helped out will....nobody should go through this its just stupide and i say sham on all those who just stand by and watch things like this happen

- The images of how the people that were massacring everyone seemed to not be human in their eyes stood out the most for Romeo Dallaire.
- The images of the amount of people dead and piled so carelessly onto the sides of the streets stood out the most for me.
- Images can be powerful because they can bring back memories and they tell a story really, they show just how harsh humans can be.
- Romeo experienced a lot of emotions like guilt, depression, anger, sorrow, etc.
- The events leading to these emotions were travelling back through Rwanda and seeing all the people dead, seeing places where he actually stood, and remembering what happened in specific areas.
- Your emotions can be translated into actions because when you really feel something it's really hard to just ignore it or whatever, you want to act on it, or you may not even want to, but you sort of in a way have to.
- I think that if Canada is going to send a few troops in, and when they're there they realise just how bad it is and that they need more support or help, they shouldn't just abandon something they started, they should back it up and see it to the end, because they're raising so many people's expectations and hope so high and then just crushing them.

Images that stood out for him was all the death and bodies he would see everywhere every day. Also, all the places that had changed tremendously since he had last been there.
The images that also stood out for me were the bodies thrown in the street as if they were nothing. They stood out, because it is hard to beleive that a group of people could slaughter the people they are living with, the people of their culture, even if they were split in two. Images can be powerful, because it is hard to beleive that someone could do that to another person. Seeing someone chop someone up with no care or emotion is a hard thing.
Romeo felt sad and very disturbed by all that was happening. He was disgusted that the world and UN were not supporting him as they needed to. They would be more intrigued by things such as media tials and what famous people were up to. He would go to the media to portray everything that was happening so that people would be informed.
I felt sick and mad watching this video, it is awful that someone would do this. Everything that happened in Rwanda led to my emotions. It is awful! The UN should not have stood by and just watched this masacre happen. My emotions could be translated into actions if I could go out and inform people on what was happening in the world while everyone was so ignerant of it all.
I think Canada should send troops to help these countries, because no one in the world should have to suffer a massacre such as this. No one in the world deserves to have their entire family murdered because another group doesn't think they are superior. The world should live in peace and accept everyones differences. If Canada had the chance to make a difference, they should take it. We would be known as a better nation, and be more respected in the worlds eyes, which is very improtant. If change or peace can be a reward, everyone should take the necesarry actions.

The images that stood out to me were how things were so different when he left. The dead bodies lying everywhere and how people had to continue living there lives around them. It would have been a horrible way to live your life. Especially all of the disease in the air. I feel really bad for him espeically since he had to go through the emotions of leaving Rwanada. I feel angry because no one else helped him and then he felt like a failure. Even though he was the only one that was trying to help. The world should have sent more troops. They needed way more people to take control. There's only so much one person can do.

Romeo experienced many different emotions usually he felt scared and he would put the blam on him. Sometimes he felt like just giving up becuase he new he had failed. Many different events led to his emotions. while I was watching this video I kinda felt scared for those people who were dieing and for all those who were fighting. I think Canada should make more of and effort to these kind of things and send in more troops and soilders to help these people.

Romeo discussed images which stood out for him they were ones of death the men womanchildern and even the elderly being demolished all around him. some images that stood out for me were the ones of bodies laying around on the roads being eaten by coyotes that was disturbing. these images stood out becasue they are not natural these ppl didnt deserve this they were innocent bystanders of war these images are powerful too the human mind because they show what we are capable of. we can all rise above this.Romeo felt an array of emotions even away from the war when he went back too the U.S there was anger frustration and saddness What events lead to these emotions? While watchiong this documentary i felt quiet disturbed and i dont really know how some ppl are tryingto justify these actions i full understand the tradgety of these events they were completely avoidable. the main reason for my emotions was probably the fact that half the world ignored it. even the UN which was made to preserve the rightsof humans. My emotions can be translated into action when i am older i plan on joining a UN peace keeping mission once i have gotten my bachalors of nursing. Canada does take alot of time out and spend thousands of thousands of dollars on these mission and fighting in these conflicts it is just sad that in this event it was so tradgic and so unbelievable that no one did believe it.

I felt normal when I was watching the movie. No events led to my emotions. Canada should be more involved in these kind of things because by sending troops because people say we are the most dependable country and always take these things very serious when it comes to innocent people killing each other.

Romeo discussed images, what images stood out for him?
-The death of his comrades and the people of Rwanda.
Which images stood out for you?
-The crying little children as they where being chopped.
Why did these images stand out?
-So many dead bodies, soo much death, anything gruesome that comes to the imagination, there is a high chance it actually happened to them.
How can images be powerful?
-The dead can tell stories just as well as a living person, you just got to know how to listen.
What emotions did Romeo experience?
-Heart breaking, soul shattering, and mental torture no human being should ever have to experience, but he experienced it and now is living with the nightmares and the guilt.
What events lead to these emotions?
-Seeing the genocide of thousands of innocent people, men, women and children, doing his best to protect them only to watch them die from starvation and sickness.
What emotions did you feel while watching this documentary?
-Not much, although I am sure if I was there I would feel just the same emotions as Romeo did when he could do nothing, the helplessness, the fear, the hatred, all of those emotions would have torn me apart.
What events lead to your emotions?
-The death of innocent people, the helplessness of being unable to do anything to save them.
How can your emotions be translated into actions?
-I think I would either lose my mind and kill as many of the evil men as I could, or take my own life rather then live with the guilt of being unable to do anything.
Should Canada make its involvement in these types of conflict more of a priority and send more troops and resources?
-Canada is a country of free people, at least that is what the government is making us choke down, in reality Canada is no different from the U.S that was made obvious during the Rwanda Genocide when the world did nothing.
-Jay Dee
Images that stood out to Romeo were very terrible, he saw dead bodies everywhere. The images that stood out to me were the dead bodies laying everywhere and they could'nt be moved because there were to many. These images stood out because bodies were piled up, dogs were eating at the people and they could smell the scent of death. Images are very powerful because they tell a story. While watching this video I felt sad and kind of grose. Yes Canada should be more involved in these types of conflicts.

He had a problem dealing with what had happened in many of teh places he visited. He partly blamed himself for whathappened although it was out of hiscontrol. Hewas very angry and frusterated, at the time, and visiting theplace probably triggered all thouse emotions. He mentioned the smell of death that lingered, and how the hutu leaders eyes were cold and unhumanlike the devil. The part that suck out for me was allt ehdead bodies lying on the ground. Itsickened me to see noone was sparred noteven thechildren. I mean it wasnt their choice to be in the war. I think that canada hs spent enough money on the military we have the equipment we need to get out there no. sure saying and writing junk down on paper make look and sound nice. but its not about that its about helping coutries in need.
looking at the genocide, is unbelievable that people could be influenced so much and take such a horrible action against it. And it reminds me of how cowardly and pathetic Belguim is. They screw up a country and they leave and come back when the war is over. They accuse romeo daillare of failure. when they pulled out their own troops. they have shown that they have no sence of justice and they are cowards. in ww2 they just didnt have enough nerve to stand up to hitler. they let other countries fight and die and they walk around like their so rightous. the world has not paid enough attention to this and I think that was a big mistake.
and the whole bit with the nose measuring and defining people what the hell gives them that right. they arent god and they have no right to do that.
all those poeple are dead and the belguims havent even thought twice about it.
those people didnt desevre to die. it has a nightmare that will never stop. so many people died and the world never glanced up at it or tried to stop it. even today nobody remembers it. well if you dont know history it will come back and repeat itself. hopefully there will be poeple who paid attention and this time. this time we will be able to stop it.

For Romeo, the main images that stood out for him are when he sees the dead bodies all lined up in the streets after killings in a village or town. Also he recognizes that he cannot complete this mission without the UN's help and he can see more death for soldiers under his command..MI Block B
I think that Canada should definitely provide more troops and resources to these types of missions, and also encourage other nations to do the same. That way, genocides and civil wars like this could possibly be prevented.

Romeo noticed how everything had changed throughout the years, although he blamed himself for not being able to help as much as he wanted to. Romeo had been scarred for life from everythign he had seen and heard. Killing became so familiar that it was a way of life. People began killing friends for survival and personal belongings. The things that changed to him is how different everything seems in Rwanda now. For me the images that stood out the most would be the place were they set up for "Protection" but lots of people starved to death. Romeo Dallaire went to hell and back in Rwanda. He tried to help but there isn't much you can do when your ordered to sit there and watch the slaughter. The things that i thought were the worst is he was working so hard to help these people and then he comes back to the base, in the field and people are dying all around. There wasn't enough supplies, like food or medicine. It was like a never ending battle. No matter how much he did to try and save them there was a chance they would just die in his protection. I think Canada should think very hard and try to send as many troops as possible into countries like that. But if they are going to do it they have to do it right, that means enough supplies for poeple who are saved from the genoicide and enough food, and also enough protection to the same the innocent. What Romeo Dallaire did was just a waste. There was nothing he could do but watch the slaughter.

For me the images of all those dead bodies stood out, because zou could see that thez had no chance to stop the killing. I think Romeo's feelings were sadness and hopelessness bacause he wanted to help but it wasnt possible bacause he had to less troops. it made me sad to hear that people are killed onlz because their nose is a little bit wider and their hair a little bit darker than the hair of some others. i dont think you can stop this racist thinking.... you can do very good jobs to prevent it but it will never "die". I think powerful countries should do everything to help weak countries through a crisis like this, even if its only to show that racism isnt "welcome".

There were many images that stood out at me which included how many dead people were laying on the sides of the streets and the piles of dead bodies just burning to nothing and most of which were children! The dead bodies that laid everywhere, the tank swerving on the road to avoid running over the bodies and the images of the stadium where the ones that stood out to me. These images stood out to me because I thought it was unreal how nobody cared and how people were dying for no reason at all. The tanks that came to retrieve their troops saw it all, and still they didn’t care. These images can be very powerful, yet they probably weren’t powerful enough. Romeo probably experience feelings that hardly any of us have ever felt before. He probably felt quite a bit of anger and frustration towards the world and towards himself. He probably felt despair and anguish. Most of all, he probably felt completely helpless. This movie was definitely an emotional one for me. It made me feel angry that the world knew what was happening and yet they did nothing. It’s unbelievable that we would see the images and the impact it had was nothing. People were starving to death in a UN protected area, and still the world didn’t care. Romeo Dallaire litarally saw death and poveryt in Rwanda. The images that really impacted him were the constant sights of dead bodies and people laying around in dirt and destruction. Dallaire experienced feelings of despaire, in part to the surroundings. Africa is a beautiful continent, very rich in natural resources. What is infuriating is the corrupt government which continues to drive Africa in the dirt. Nothing can be done for this continent unless the people don't do something for themselves first. All the rest of the world will be able to do is continue to donate money and food, but in the end that will not be enough, while the more is being given, the more is being destroyed everyday. Every part of the world can continue to do everything they possibly can, but there is no saving the tragic and hopeless continent of Africa. Which is very unfortunate for its potential for prosperity is imense.

Romeo was part of a very disturbing and self deflating era when he saw the images he did in Rawanda. I found it extremely sad and heart breaking to see all of the small children scrounging for food in the war devastated land and almost praying to be dead. The circumstances were unbelievable of what they had to endure. People, especially children shoud not have to endure those kind of hardships in their life. Images that stood out for Romeo and myself were the mounds of dead humans lying all over the ground. It was very disturbing. The massacre was a very tragic event for Dellaire and he will continue to suffer from it. I think that Canada should send more troops and resources to make these kind of conflicts more of a priority.

i think that the images that stood out for me are about the same for Romeo, the piles of dead bodies along the streets everywhere, and the skulls lined up along the tables because you realize how cruel humans can really get sometimes without a limit. For Romeo, those thoughts and images stuck with him for months on end, which made him feel depressed and angery at everything. Images can often be powerful because they can bring back memories that aren't always happy that you've been trying to forget. i think that if Canada sends in troops to go into a place to keep the peace or protect them, they shouldn't go in and decide to abandon them once they see what is really going on, they should stay till the end and send in more troops to save as many people as they can.

Romeo Dallaire's documentary Shake Hands with the Devil, was definatly a moving expirence to watch. Most of the images that Mr. Dallaire talked about, were the ones that had to do with bodies, and the same ones stood out for me, especially the skulls of the children, that was praticularely hard to view. They stood out because, the reason they had all died was such an insignificant one. Mr. Dallaire had faced many hard times while in Rawanda and when he went back a flood of different emotions came to him, such as anger, sadness, and disgust, and while watching this documentry I felt the same way. Canada should make its involvement in these types of conflict more of a priority and send more troops and resources because they are all equaly important, all people are equal, but at the same time canada shouldent have to do it alone.

The images that stood out for Romeo Dallaire were images of brutality, murder and slaughter. I also these images as well as killed soldiers who were trying to make peace. These images of death stood out because it happened so brutally and in such large of numbers. Women and children were massacred by effective killing militia that were supplied with machetes. These images of genocide are powerful because they target well of countries for being racist and not caring about the death occurring in non-important countries. Romeo Dallaire dealt with grief and sorrow for he did not have the power to defend the Tutsis. The events that led to this were the extermination of Tutsi by the Hutu government. Also, the U.S government and Canadian government would not send any relief troops. Emotions are translated into actions when you protest and do as much as you can without interfering physically with a sovereign country. Canada should use conflict such as economic sanctions to deal with this kind of matter, but should never become militarily envolved.

In my opinion Canada should put more pressure on the United Nations to eliminate these herendous genocides.I believe many emotions are provoked including grief, powerlessness and sadness because absolutely nobody is winning in these situations. I am enraged because this is an exact repeat of the holocaust, but nobody seems to care because it isnt occuring in their own backyard.
One person against the genocide cannot eliminate this, it needs to be unity on a worldwide scale, but it starts with one person.
It leaves me wondering, if it even matters, how history tends to repeat itself.

The images that stood out to me where the piles of dead bodies all over the ground and people steping over them like it was no big deal. Its pretty bad when people get used of that brutal of killing.

The images that really stood out for me were the ones where peole were getting brutally murdered and the dead bodies lying everywhere rotting. The images that stood out for Romeo Dallaire were the ones of people getting slaughtered in Rwanda. These images really stood out because you were watching live people like you and me getting slaughtered by other people and at the time there was nothing you could do about it. Pictures can be powerful because they are worth a thousand words and actually show details of whats happening and what things really look like instead of getting a mental picture. The emotions that Romeo felt were guilt, anger and sorrow. The events that led to these emotions were the people getting slaughtered, towns becoming destroyed and children attending in warfare. The emotions I felt watching this documentary was sadness because innocent people were getting slaughtered and tortured. My emotions can become into actions because those images and emotions don't become forgotten and it makes you want to go out there and help innocent people like that. I think that once Canadians start something they should not just abandoned it, they should finish what they started even if it has to include more troops.

well i didn't really pay attention to the whole thing. but i didn't really like what i saw. i could stand the dead bodies all over, but the thing that bothered me was how they video taped them killing each other with machetes and no one doing anything. no police no army.they just let it keep going. we did very little but there was one guy who was determined to blame Canada, USA and other countries on what happened there. it still would of happened it wasn't are fault. we could have did more to stop it but we didn't. that doesn't make it are fault! if would have happened anyway. if it was are fault then it should be every nation not just ours who tried a little. stuff happens then u die its how the world works u just sometimes u get lucky and something or someone helps u out.

I thought the movie showed world problems that happen very often. Although this was a terrible event people seem to think that its the fault of the "superpowers" for not stepping in to help. i think that people need to understand that there are politics involved and sending an army to stop a violent war from starting isn't as easy as yelling for help. Yes Romeo was trying to help, he to knew that he couldnt do much just by himself. Seeing all the bodies of dead people he might have talked cause serious tramua. I think this video shows that people want some one to blame for unfortunate turn of events . what stood out the most to me was peoples desire to blame someone else or not think about the difficulty to send an army to help. Yes, the governments of U.S and Canada should have stepped in to help but they didnt see the need to help a third world country like Rwanda. If an army had been sent into Rwanda there would have been more deaths on every side. take the Iraq war for example US soliders die at the hands of "terrorists" and the media makes a massive comotion about a single US soliders death, yes its unfortunate but it happens. The death toll of sending an army into Rwanda would most likely be high as well.I dont understand why people can call for an army at the drop of a hat to save them from death but on the other hand when a soldier dies the media attacks the decision the government made to send aid. It seems a little hypicritical to me. I believe events like this will happen maybe not on such a tremendous scale but africa is made up of lots of little towns with different groups living in one area so civil wars might break out and create havok. So to sum this up i think that helping Rwanda by sending an army there to stop the tutis and hutus from fighting would create another war between the Army that helps and the tutis and hutus might unite .

The thing that stood out to me the most is seeing how people were butchered with machetes and the horrific image of limbs and bodies piled all together.I believe the 'superpowers' could have paid more attention to this problem and done more to help rather than being a bystander and watching it all happen, but with saying that I believe Canada and other nations shouldn't be fully blaimed as it wasn't the nations fault that this issue happened in the first place.I do strongly believed the superpowers should of went into Rwanada and should have tried to resolve the issue between the Hutus and tutis.I believe thier should be a better plan for dealing with these issues in the future as these kind of problems happen around the world frequently.I think we need to be better prepared by dealing with the issues that causes fueds like the one between hutus and tutis by for example sending aid to prevent proverty which was one of the factors that led to the major issue in Rwanada.
I though the documentary Shake Hands With The Devil was good for us to watch and that it showed us what problems other countries have to deal with everyday. In Rwanda there was no support or help. There was lots of racism to the people who lived in Rwanda because of their race and because of who they are. In Rwanda the UN did their best to try and settle the issues that were happening. The UN along with Romeo were sent there to try and resolve the conflicts that were happening, but it was not an easy mission.Romeo and the rest of his group were not given any help by the government and others, so they had no supplies or any medical supplies to help people who were injured and were in rough shape. I think that Romeo Dallaire did a good job in Rwanda and that without his help the situation would of been much worse. I don not care what anyone else thinks but i think he did an ausome job.In situations like that in Rwanada I guess it is always easier to blame someone else for mistakes and conflicts. The Rwanda tragedy was very tough for Romeo Dallaire as well as others but Romeo had a bigger responsibility and that was to shape things up. Romeo Dallaire saw things that no one wants to see like dead people, people who were suffering and other stuff like that. To me that was hard to watch.Romeo Dallaire will never forget those tragic memories but he is moving on. I think that Romeo Dallaire and his group should have been helped out by the United States and that president Bill Clinton should not have ignored the Rwanda crisis. I think that Bill Clinton at the time knew exactly what was going on in Rwanda but did not care about trying to do anything to help.

I've had my class over at D.P. Todd do the same activity... you can read their comments at http://soc11.blogspot.com/2008/05/witness-to-evil.html#comments
After watching "Shake Hands with the Devil", chronicling Romeo Dallaire's underfunded UN mission to Rwanda in 1994, I am now in possession of newfound thoughts regarding human rights and the violations that can occur (and do occur, weather or not we choose to accept it!)
The thing that disturbed me the most was the image of the skulls lined up , some with wholes missing indicating torture. I really can't imagine what the Rwandans who were leading tours throughout that place must think; I know I would feel like I had to atone if I was a guide there.
Dallaire was very candid with his feelings and emotions, and I felt proud to have him as a fellow canuck when he was defending his views against the obtuse Belgian ambassador. Also, hearing that Dallaire "passed out drunk under a park bench in Hull, Quebec and was hospitalized" struck a cord with me. It seemed all of Canada knew how much he was suffering.
I appreciated the poignant views of a friend of Dallaire's who, near the end of the movie, still didn't buy the "remorse" of the nations who did nothing to prevent this genocide, 10 years after the fact. It's things like this that set us up for another genocide.
