At the beginning of World War II Canada's military forces were undermanned, ill prepared and poorly equiped. This resulted in a massive effort on the part of the Canadian government to get our forces "up to speed" in order to meet our committments to the other allied forces. Many people today feel Canada's military is in much the same state as government military spending has been severly cut and Canadian citizens put more emphasis on domestic issues such as health care and education.
Do you think it is important for Canada to have a strong military force? Would you support additional tax money being spent on the military and if so where do you think that funding should come from? If you do not think military spending should be a priority where do think government should spend its money?

I don't think we should spend more money on military because we don't need much of one right now.

In my opinion, I think Canada should have atleast an average military force because many of my family members are someway involved with the military. I would support the military out of tax money but only out the people who are willing and can afford it, or there can be fundraisers to raise money for the military. If the money doesn't get spent on the mility, I think it should be spent on help people find cures to diseases and helping the school systems.

I dont think Canada should spend more money on a military. We are a peaceful country and dont have much trouble with other countries. I think the tax money and extra money should be spent on hospitals and other necessities.

I think that Canada should have a strong military just incase we need to go to war in the future. I would not support additional tax for military needs. I think the government should provide the military with money. We already pay enough taxes so the government should have enough money. I think the government should put the money towards health care instead of military spending.

I don't think we should spend more money on millitary because we're suppose to be a peace making country not a fighting country. We should have the minimum and that's it. If someone did declare war on us whihc is highly unlikely then we would have to go into a total war state. But right now we can just have the minimum and spend enough for the arms to be updated so their not outdated when we do have to fight and that's it.

I think that Canadian government should spend money for both military and other facilities such as health, eldery cares etc.
It is really important for one independent country to have its own strong military whether there would be War or fight or not. Having its own strong military system itself is the important because nowadays most countries have their own military forces and it is worth.

I dont think that Canada should spend as much money on the military but thats just because I find the whole concept of war rather stupid, I do not see how killing thousands of people can bring peace because no matter what people are still losing their family. I also think that people should be made into paying taxes for something that alot of people are really against.

i dont think canada needs a big military becuase i think its more important to improve education and health care. canada had always had the choice if it wants to go in war or not.. so canada doesnt need a military because if there is a war the can just say we dont want to take part. and if they want, they could build a military.

I think we should have much more spending on military projects, and equipment. The air force is servicing an aged fleet that is indesperate need of a revamp. Sea King's are falling out of the sky on the regular. This is unacceptable, for a country our size to have no control over our own skies is naive. You assume no one willl attack Canada, if anyone were to ever attack the US guess who's in the middle? Surprise! If the US gets Nuked we get Nuked. To not be able to defend ourselves is a major issue.

I think we need to have an army just in case something really bad does happen. But in cases like the war that Bush is controlling, I would not pay tax money for that. We dont need to be fighting but because Bush is a stupid fat headed moron, he wants to have an army. I don't believe fighting solves anything. It will only cause grief to the poor families who are losing their loved ones. But if we ever got attacked, I would like to have a military force in case.

I believe it is important for Canada to have a strong military force. Too many lives are spared due to the lack of training, and poor equipping of soldiers. Many people support the fact that Canada is a peace keeping nation, however, if Canada were to be invaded and all of a sudden the war mongers were taking your rights away you would have a much different stance. If Canada has a stronger military, social security would be much higher. I for one would rather pay $1.15 for a candy bar instead of a $1.06 knowing that my way of life will be preserved. The money used for Canada’s military should come from taxes and astronomy funs instead of wasting money to accomplish something some other country has already done (ex. NASA.)
“Of all the enemies to public liberty war is, perhaps, the most to be dreaded because it comprises and develops the germ of every other. War is the parent of armies; from these proceed debts and taxes … known instruments for bringing the many under the domination of the few.… No nation could preserve its freedom in the midst of continual warfare.”

I think canada should not spend more money on military force because it is now strong enough. instead, we should help those poor and in poverty. the tax money and the extra money should go to them and to those who in need for help!

I don't think that people should have to pay an additional tax for military services. There are more important things that the money should be spent on.

With the situation of constant current war fare it is important for Canada to have a good military, for it's determined involvement. I think a certain amount of funding is necessary to keep the troops well-equipped, but is shoudn't be the governments' number one priority. There's allot of places money should be going instead, to decrease taxes, because they are a real problem within our community.

in my opinion we should only spend money on military when wartime comes. it is useless other wise to be spending money on military. there are many other things that are more important to be spending money on

I do not believe Canada should expand it's miltitary through raising taxes. If they were to independently raise money for the military, I'm all for it. As of right now I don't think a larger military force is in demand for Canada. Keeping its spendings on public affairs as we are now is the way to go. Lowering taxes would be cool too, wouldn't mind that allowance thing again...but thats another thing I suppose.
BG blk3
I believe that canada should focus on our military because it deeply establishes us as a country. I think that we should tax the big corporations more money to support the army more. Canada is a great country that is known for having health care and etc but we are not known for being a country that can defend itself.

I think its a really poor choice of the gov't to be spending more money right now on military equipment. we don't need it as the moment and probably not for a while, and by that time we will have newer techonolgy then we have now an they will just end up spending more money on that and not using the old equipment they built to use. Its good to have a military foce but not to overeceed it when money can be put on more usefull things

I think we should at least have a decent military but i don't thik we should pour our tax dollars into. And right at the moment our military is in Afganistan i think we should get our troops out of there

There shouldnt be more funding put into the military because I dont think war is nessesary and we already have a reputation as a peaceful country. Instead I think that the government should put more money towards health care and post secondary education.

I think that it is important for Canada to have a strong military, and be able to defend itself against threats to our country. I would support additional taxes if it were for the sole purpose of building up a strong military. I think that otherwise, that taxes should not be raised. We already spend enough money paying taxes

I do not think canada should spend more money on war. we are right nowalready waisting millions on the war in afghanistan. I think we should have some money in reserve just incase a real war should come but we are a country of peace and it would make us look as if we weren't if we sarted bying a whole bunch of military equiptment. whith so many different countries a part of use ( immigrants ) we most likely will not be at war anyways.

i think that it is important for cCanada to have a strong military, incase anything that involves wars and such, come up. I wouldnt support military out of tax because, Canada's militarty is good enough for now, and Canada gets along with many countries. The money could be spent on hospitals and anything else that needs repairing.

Canada has been a war-free nation for solong that we've forgotten how to defend ourselves and given up our military, they've all become Veterans or faded in to society. It's important to remember that disaster hits when we least expect. We are a peaceful country,a peaceful people, but even we need an emergency defense unit. Now is the time. Who knows how much worse it will get.Like the old saying: it has to get worse before it can get better.

I think that we should have a somewhat good military cause we dont exactly need a really good one right now..more of our money needs to be towards medical things like hospitals and health care, and even for schoools! some Schools are so crowded cause they have no where else to go

I think that Canada should spend more on the military because if we did happen to get into a situation where we did need to use the military we would be in trouble. We dont have to have the strongest military we just have to have a deicent one. I think the funding for this should come from like a one or two percent tax that strictly went to military purposes.
C.M. Block 3
I dont think Canada should be spending anymore money on the military. I think some money should be spent to keep the military on its feet and well prepared. But there are many problems the government needs to fix other than funding a minitary that we arent really using right now . Money should be put in places that will decrease the money taken from the tax payers.

Personally I think that we should have a bit of a backup plan where we will be able to access some funds in case of war. Over the years we could have been putting small amounts of money into a separate account for warfare and modern equipment. We already pay enormous amounts of money for taxes, so 15% could be taken from the funds that are always contributed to education and healthcare. It is important to have a strong military force but Canada has strong ties with Britain and the U.S. so we shouldnt have to scramble up any large amoounts anytime soon. Menawhile we can start putting forth monthly or even yearly sums and have some support if the event of war occured, and we wouldnt be high and dry.

I think millitary funding should be a top priority for the Canadian government becauseour military is very small and outdated compared to other big countries. The money should come from where ever the heck the government can get it.

Honestly, I am a firm believer that as a country we should be more so focused on building lives for the homeless, not in hopes of immadiate results, but more so with hopes the eventually (within the next 10 years)it will not be ruintine to drive down town and see dozens of homeless people, on block after block, as opposed to spending thousands on machinery, equipment and soldiers for more war than had already been created. or even towards hospitals, medicines, cures, or educations! Although realisticly speaking defending our country is a nessesity, so in that case I am willing to say that I personally do believe i would put out the extra money for our soldiers and army.

I dont think that canada should spend even more money on military. We dont really have much of a need for a military at this time being. But maybe one day in the future we may need a military force.
I dont support extra tax money going to it. Right now our military isnt even fighting our battle in iraq and afganistan.

i think that Canada should save its money from taxes and use it on more important things such as hospital needs. Yes we can just walk into the hospital adn they treat us, but its not always the fastest even if it is free. so maybe if we had more money to make larger hospitals and pay more nurses and doctors we would be better off.

I think the government should spend its money on hospitals and people in poverty. There are millions of homeless people who cant afford to feed their children and dont even know where there next meal is coming from. War is pointless and pathetic.
K.A BLKC
I do think its important for canada to have a strong military, without one canada could quite possibly be under attack because of the fact that we dont. that dose not mean i think we should join any wars, or start fighting, such as the war in iraq. It is good that we are helping there, but we are not fighting, we are keeping peace, but with our trained military at least we are prepared...although i think its more important to put money into training people in the peace keeping missions all over the world. I dont think anyone should have a problem paying extra tax to keep them safe. we have to pay tax for so many usles things already would it realy cause harm to pay a tax that woul help train people to keep us safe? but i dont think tax payers should be in charge of all funds. i think the government should pitch in, becuase these people would not just protect us, they would protect canada, so in that case the canadian gvernment should help pay.

I believe that Canada should be spending our money on domestic issues such as social services, health care and education. I don't believe any more funds should be spent on the military force because i don't agree with Canada's participation in war. I believe that by focussing on issues such as edcucation, health care, and social services we will produce well rounded healthy individuals who will not think war is a necessary or effective way of dealing with the world issues.

I think that our status of government should change thare veiws of miltitarism because it could have more power and it is good because our dollar is high and we by alot of weapons from the U.S or do more resarch on our weapons. Its good to have a military because we can have more control over the world. It would also help out the outcome in afganistan.

I don't think Canada needs a strong military force, we are supposed to be a peaceful country. I myself would refuse to pay the added taxes because there is no need for an army if youre at peace with other countries. The government should spend its money on schools and businesses. Schools in Canada are being underfunded and some small businesses are very good ideas but need some money to start it...

I think Canada should always have a strong military force all the time incase of attack or war in the future. i think we should spend more money on a military force because we should be prepared for anything. If we are not prepared we could get screwed over really bad. I would support it depending on how much the tax would be. A foundation should be made so that people can donate to create a stronger military force as well as the government should be paying for it too. If money did not get spent on a military force it should be spent on cleaning downtown areas and improving health care and hospitals.
