International Aid

NGOs (Non-Government Organizations) and government agencies play an important role in fighting poverty, famine and disease throughout the world. In recent times many of these organizations have been criticized for having too much overhead and administrative costs while not getting enough of the money directly to those in need. Others say that while there are flaws with some of the organizations any amount of aid that reaches these countries is better than nothing.

Visit the following sites and comment on the work these NGOs are doing. What organization would you donate either your time or money to?

Oxfam
The Red Cross
Doctors without Borders
CIDA
War Child
DATA
Unicef
World Vision

well i used to give money to amnesty international- oganizing in aiding political figures & civilians. Those who are stripped of their rights and are inprisoned. although the aim of amnesty is changing i think they have the right idea

i think that helping no matter how little money you have is important we could feed everyone in the world but we do not-that says alot
...sure there are alot of people against it cause they have part of their brain missing but you cant listen to everyone otherwise your ears would die and fall off-

I think that some of these organizations don't get the money and donations to the people who need it as effectively as others, so you have to be careful which one you choose to support. I would donate to either The Red Cross or Unicef because they are well known for for aiding needy countries all around the world.

The red Cross is the best way to go because they not only help just kids or just adults they help everyone who needs it. they give money, food and shelter to people who need to most. The Red Cross also helps people who have been in disastrous situations. The red cross is the best. YAY!!!

I think that we should be donating a lot more money to these organizations. there should be a tax for every developed country that should go to undeveloped countries. I agree that any amount of aid that reaches these countries is a good thing. I would donate my money to Unicef.

I would donate most of my time to either Doctors without borders or UNICEF.

Doctors without borders helps with medical needs which is what a lot of them need. UNICEF helps give the children and their mothers money to live.

I would donate my time or money to World Vision because Africa is a beautiful place with beautiful children in it who just need help. With the young children in Africa, all they need is some help to have a better life. I'v always wanted to go to Africa for a missions trip. All i wanted to do is help people, but children are the most important. They are young, easily scared, and they should enjoy their childhood. If I could have a great childhood, why can't they?

All of these organizations need time and money from people. Although I would donate my time and money to the red cross because it helps them supply food, medical assistance and materials. Also the best part of it is the red cross reunites young children and teens with their families.

I would give money to UNICEF because they are helping people all over the world. I think that it's important to focus on all of the people. Not just one part of the world. I also like the fact that they do focus on cirtain areas such as Aids, child development and child protection.

Oxfam helps with political problems and tsunami problems.
The Red Cross sends doctors and helps with medical problems. Red Cross is a major help for AIDS support and education. Doctors without Borders also help by sending doctors with AIDS releif and education as well.
CIDA is a major development assistant. Helping people make tools to develop their countries.
War Child helps AIDS orphans and developing other countries.
DATA helps educate children by making classes and schools for the children to learn.
UNICEF is for children protection, education and development. They help with children with AIDS. They also want to educate children so they have a better future.
World Vision is a way to sponsor children who lose their parents to AIDS.

I would want to support DATA because I want to help educate children so they can make better lives for themselves if they become smarter. I would also like to donate to Doctors without Borders to help send doctors to other countries to help save people from diseases.

Oxfam is the suopporting role of violence and the tsunami problems. The red cross is supporting the people by getting them medical and food supplies to those having left there homes. Doctors without borders seem to help the people with aids relief and education. The CIDA supports the sustainable development reducing poverty and providing humaitary relief. War child is a place that seems to support all children that are forced to a fight and try not to make them go into wars.

If could support it would have to be War Child because sending little children to war is not right and should not happen to other kids

I think many organization taking little amounts from the donation in their own pockets so we should be very carefull who we are donating money or help.
If you choose a organization you should get some informations about them so you can trust them to use your money
i would donate my money for doctors who really travelling to those countries and aid right at those places.
Or i would donate my money to Unicef because it is a well known and trustfull organization. i could be sure that my money reach the "poor" countries.

I would give my time and/or money to World Vision because of a bunch of reasons. They've been an organization for pretty much 50 years so they know what they're doing, and have learned from their mistakes. I like their mission. They're helping children get out of poverty and hardships everywhere, and children are their future so they should be taught properly and raised properly. But they also help the child's family and community. I think what they're doing is awesome.

I would give my money to doctors without borders becausethey are trying to really hard to help the people who need medical attention who usually cant get it..and who have been hurt in wars or have contracted fatal illness who would die without their help.

I think such organizations are a good idea. Everything has a cost, nothing in this world is free, so to say they have to much expenses is not [looking at the big picture. They provide aid for those who need it the most, that's the bottom line.

If I was going to donate either my time or money, I would have to donate to the ones I have heard the most about. That would be either Red Cross or UNICEF. My grandma donates to Red Cross so I know a little bit about that charity, also, on holidays like Halloween, the schools get orange UNICEF boxes so kids can collect change for the charity.

Ok take all are government funds out of military and put it towards food to feed someone elses mouth..that's alot of mouths..now picture every country taking the funds out of there military and doing the same.... that's alot of people that'd benifit from it. Also throw in money an average citizen could spend on it if it weren't for material objects in which have no value besides there material...imagine a whole north america of people doing this...Hell all we'd have to worry about then is were to put all the blood run corporations in which export this shit...and we'd have alot of happy people.

but it's not that simple as it's something we've never attempted right?

I would most definitely donate both my time and money to UNICEF. UNICEF uses all of the money to protect the basic fundamental rights of children. This includes the survival of children, basic education & gender equality, child protection, prevention of HIV/AIDS and everything necessary to assist a child in breaking the poverty cycle. UNICEF is very different from many other NGO’s and their operations. Although International development agencies intentions are good, they are a very ineffective waste of money/time that actually makes the problem worse. The money that CIDA, World Bank and other organizations lend to developing nations is used to create wars… not build schools. These wars exploit young children and put the government of the developing nation in debt. Then over half of the money the nation annually generates is used to pay back these loans, not improve the quality of living. UNICEF’s money goes directly to the families to improve the standards of living, instead of going to the corrupt leaders of the nation.

I really like giving money to children in need and helping the poor. But i always wonder how much of my money goes to the children. For example, at my work we have bracelets that help the children and your dollar goes to that. Apparantly. But since I have worked there I have learned the money doesn't go to the children, but merely our cash total at teh end of the day. And its pathetic. Here we are giving up our money to help these people to live better and its not even going to them. There needs to be a harsher policy for actually giving these kids money cause they do need help.

i Wouldnt give any money to any organization because they are a bunch of scammers. You dont know exactly where your moneys going or even how much of it is actually being given to them. The government has way too much on there hands and one person cant change the world thats for sure!
The government is helping anyone. Theres billions of starving people and it doesnt seem to be getting any better....it makes me sad when i see little babies and such dying for no apparent reason just because they were born into that life. Maybe the government should be giving them birth control so they can stop having children and then just taking away there lives so fast cuz of food and poverty and diseases. Its a very confusing topic for me!I dont get it. :|

The world needs more aid than can be given at one time,if every one of us six billion pitched in, we'd only sustain half the world problems. Being free in Canada means that we have the opportunity to change lives by what little we do, by what little we give. I myself, would volunteer for the Red Cross and Doctors without Borders. World Vision would certainly recieve some attention as well as money.Every little bit counts,so do your part, whatever it may be.

I think that organizations that do something to help those in need are all good, but if Ihad to choose one it would be Data. In Africa Aid's is a major pandemic that kills millions of people. This organization is focused on educating the African people on Aids and giving treatment to those that are infected.

I would give my money to War Child. Because UNICEF and Red Cross are the most well known organizations that help people. So i would give it to the ones that arent as well known. Even though everyone is well aware that for every dollar you give, the gov't takes some of it. but i think that happens with everything. I read somewhere that the people your donating to only get less than half of what your giving. Money wise.

I would donate my time and money to World Vision because they are a Christian Organization and I'm sure that they would get the money to the people in need. Even if its half of what I would give to them for a child but still it would be better than nothing. Helping these children who live in places where accomodations aren't sanitary or pleasant would make me happy.

I think all of these organizations do some help towards people in need. Whether its alot or a bit they still help them out with the money the public donates to them. Sure there's probably a lot of money lost in the process or taken from these donations for the organizations own purpose but if you give a little somehow some of it might make it to a person in need.

I would donate both time and money towards World Vision because it had a significant impact on television and give people the opportunity to sponsor a child of their own. No one realizes what these children go through and to be able to care for them and now their progress after you donate, makes you feel like your accomplishing something by making their world a better and safer place to live. They need their education and fresh water and without our help they would suffer. This site of World Vision gives the globe an easy and grasping apportunity to make a difference in a little boy or girls life. There isnt a feeling like it.

Every one of these organizations are important and necessarey. War child which is a registered Canadian charity dedicated to providing urgently neeeded humanitarian assistance to war-affected children around the world, and helps generate awareness, support, and advocacy rights everywhere, is one that resonates with me.
I stand by the sad truth however, that unless civil war affected countries and countries affected by poverty and famine, don't help themselves from the inside first, there is no amount of money or organization support that will help.

Definately not Red Cross or World Vision. Their administrative costs are massive.

I used to volunteer for War Child in the UK and then here in Canada. Their overhead is tiny, like 10% or something to that effect. Money well spent if you ask me.

After reading about the work that all of these NGO's are doing, It's difficult to choose just one, when there are so many people out there suffering from situations that are more than treatable but preventable. The issues that these NGO's focus on are reducing and preventing; many would say, and I would agree it's a bigger problem than lack of resources and money it's about justice and equality of mankind. I would donate my time to Warchild, they help war affected children all over the world that aren't nearly as fortunate to have the same opportunities as us, living amongst war .Warchild works on preventing more children from dieing amongst conflict, preventing any more from becoming disabled, and keeping children from becoming separated from their families. Warchild also focuses on putting an end to poverty and conflict. All of the other NGO's seem to be quite credible, many that have become household names-- that just goes to show how much of an impact one person contributing to a humanitarian mission can make a difference. World Vision helps poverty stricken children and works on improving the communities that surround them. CIDA- Canadian International Development Agency focus is to bring down poverty by promoting human rights and supporting sustainable development as well. While Oxfam International is also campaigning for a fairer world for the poor that fights poverty by looking into deeper issues such as trade, conflict, human rights, disease, debt, aid and education the one thing Oxfam does differently is that they lobby in hopes for a policy change that will address the reason for poverty. Everyone has heard of UNICEF and its focus is on aiding children in breaking the poverty cycle by protecting the rights, survival, protection, basic education & gender equality of children, and prevention of HIV/AIDS. DATA- Debt Aid Trades Africa is an organization founded by, Bono from U2 that focuses on abolishing poverty and aids in Africa. Many publicized campaigns have come out of DATA like the inspi(red) campaign. While Doctors Without Borders deliver emergency aid to people effected by conflict all over the world. ICRC- International Committee of the Red Cross objective is to protect victims, prisoners, the wounded, and civilians affected by war, conflict and violence by providing international relief.

Unicef enhances child survival and development, protects children, aids kids with HIVS/AIDS, provides people of all races and cultures with an education and gender quality and finally creates advocacy and partnerships. Although Unicef is an NGO it creates enough financial aid to support those who really need it. If i were to support an NGO, I dont think that there is one that is less important than another. If it was possible to support all of them that would be the way to go for me!
