Testing your political views

Read the following instructions and complete the two activities. These were developed by a friend of mine, Mr. Thielmann, over at DP Todd.

Activity One
Purpose: find out what kind of political views you have and how they compare with world figures and political parties

Instructions:
go to http://www.politicalcompass.org/
read the instructions and complete the quiz
read through your results page to learn about your views
summarize what you learned from the quiz by commenting in response to this posting on the course blog -- http://www.soc11eh.blogspot.com

Tips:
left vs right: left-wing usually means more government control over industry and economy; right-ring usually means less government regulation and intervention (laissez-faire)
authoritarian vs libertarian: authoritarian means powerful government which controls rights and freedoms, sometimes it can be a dictatorship; libertarian means less government control of rights, sometimes less government in general

Activity Two
Purpose: learn about different ways of organizing nations by politics, economy, and values

Instructions:
go to http://www.nationstates.net
read the introduction and sign up to “build” your nation
experiment with the simulation for as long as you need to see how it works, more if you have the time (warning: NationStates can be addictive!)
summarize what you learned from the simulation by commenting on this posting on the course blog -- http://www.soc11eh.blogspot.com

Tips:
See how the choices you make at the beginning affect the kind of country which is generated by the simulator. Look at other countries and issues around the “world” to see what others have done.

It was a good test to see where we stand in the political scheme of things, with our own views.

Anonymous said...

It was an interesting quiz, but the outcomes are not necessarily right. It may aid us in discovering where we stand in our political views, but no one knows better than you what you believe, so you yourself should determine what kind of person you are.

Anonymous said...

The quiz was interesting, however,it seemed to be somewhat drawn out.It showed that I was more libertarian (like the Dalai Llama). It was useful in discovering where my political views may stand.

Anonymous said...

I learned that I am communist. haha

I am a liberatarion. I thought that this was really interesting to see where I stand in the politics.

The quiz was super long and some of the quesions made no sense due to the lack of knowledge towards government. It said that i was libertarian like the Dalai Llama. It could be inacurate because I guessed on the quesions I Didn't understand. I think it's wrong that apparently George Bush is authoritarian...

it was cool

It was a fun test. It had alot of questions ive never thought about before. I found out that im a libertarian.

I learned that I am more Authoritarian (which means powerful government which controls rights and freesoms) then Libertarian. But I don't think the quiz is right on every thing or the outcomes are not quite right.

It was interesting to see how I really thought about governement. I am like Ghandi. And with NationStates I was quite happy with the goverment I formed.

The NationStates is an ingenius... website! And I'm happy with the Nation I've created... I have a Trout Farming Industry!! :P

That game was really really lame. I found it to be boring and useless. Other then that, I enjoyed it.

Anonymous said...

i loved that game im going to go play it at home to after im done surfing porn!

Anonymous said...

I found the game kinda pointless. If i actually made a country it wouldn't run like that. My civil rights were below average which sucked! I think that the game doesnt represent my leadership skills at all:)

The nationstates can be addictive !!!!!! It took me forever to find a name for it.

Activity Two:
I did pretty good, considering criminal law lacked in importance. My political freedoms were superb, civil rights were excellent and economy was reasonable.

Well lets just say that I didn't really enjoy doing that little quiz. I don't understand how some stupid test can tell me what I feel. And I don't even understand what it means anyway. I guess I'm like Freidman. He better be a good man because I am a good person. I think the government is tryingto control too many ppl's lives and that is not right. people should be able to do what they wish because in the end it will be them who will learn from their own mistakes. Ppl can choose their lives for themselves

After completing the first test, I found out that in Canada many things are openly spoken that would otherwise be placed as inmature objectives in other countries. The test was not hard but some questions took thinking to decide whether or not I supported them....MI Block B

The test was...decent. I'm still unsure of how accurate the test truly is, but I think it did a good job of describing my political views. I truly feel government should regulate industry. Look at China, they are probably the most powerful nation in all of the world, human rights are a major issue however...not a good thing.

okay well the game was interesting, i couldn't exactly find a name for my land so i had to randomly look at someone's purse and steal a name. that kinda sucked just a bit. i didnt really understand the game too much it was kinda diffefrent haha but it was okay. it is just kinda confusing. but i think my country of frenchconnection'sland is pretty good and well run. were not hard over there we are kinda nd like to help ppl. that is what i would be like anyway haha anyway ya cool game:)

I personally think these quizes are a waste of time, but sometimes its cool to see what the computer thinks of you i guess. no matter what the computer or this quiz says what i belieave is what i beleave. i also think that telling someone there beliefs are like the ones of hitler because of the way they answered questions on a quiz is kind of demoralizing.

the test was ok.
it told me that i'm a left liberitarian but still aproxmetly in the center of the diagramm. which i think is relatively true...
but i thinnk it was a little long and i dont know if all the questions are realy needed.

The quiz was rather interesting but some of the questions were a little bit riddiculous but it really made you think about your views and what you think of certain things you may not think about usually. I dont think a chart can really determine who you are though i think it's your decision about what political views you have.

In the quiz I didn't really learn anything at all because I already knew where I stood on all that stuff. The quiz was kind of stupid to because I don't like to be grouped in with political groups like the "left" and "right". Just annoys me

The nationstates game is ok but you run out of things to do pretty fast. I had very good civil rights, reasonable economy and below average political freedoms.

I learned from the NationStates that I have strong economy views and that I care about safety.

With the second activity I learned that to govern or develop a country properly, you need to consider many aspects such as the style of government, the people living in your country and the income and taxation. Even though your government may be doing an amazing job at governing, there will always be a hand full of people that will complain and disagree with everything you may propose...MI Block B

Well my civil rights were good which was surprising because I said I would rule with a psychotic form of government which i wouldnt actually do i just thought it would be interesting. My economy is a basket case one which is kinda awesome and my political freedoms were EXCELLENT. So this assignment was kind of interesting in a way that i thought my society would completely suck because of the psychotic nature of the ruling but it turned out good so that was like really weird!

My economy and my political freedoms were really good. My country was said to have a strong punishment for criminals and that alot of freedom because pretty much everything was legalized. I thought it would actually be a horrible country but i would actually not mind living in it myself, especially because of the rudolph the red nose reindeer moto :)

I found the test to be okay, despite being alittle confusing. I feel that my outcome sort of matched by political views, but in the end, a test can't tell you what your beliefs are and where you truly stand.

And with the second activity, I realized that there's alot of decision to make when it comes to running a nation.

The test had wierd questions, some that i didnt even understand so i dont think the information is that accurate. Im more on the left side and i guess i beleive in more government control over industry and economy. I do think that the economy should be looked after better. i dont think drug addicts should be able to get free money to do more bad, illegal things...it doesnt make sence:|

The quiz told me that I am a left wing, meaning more government control over industry and economy, which is not really a direct representation of my thoughts. A quiz can't tell you how you think or the people you support, as your beliefs are your own.

Taking this political compass quiz I detrmined that my political views are slightly to the left of the society graph. Therefore I am considered more Conservative and like olf traditional values and want to stay with the regular rules and terms versus coming in with the new and changing regulations. My outcome in the graph also determined that I fall under the Libertarian Left of the social scale. I supposedly prefer miore government control over the industry and economy, being in the left wing, and being libertarian I am considered having less control of government rights and sometimes less government in general.
In Activity 2 : from this simulation I learned that my nation is a tiny environmentally stunning nation that large government juggles Law and Order, Religion and Sprituality and Social Welfare. The answers I chose in the beginning had a big impact on how influential my nation has become or is.

Activity 1
Apparently I am a slightly Socialsit, slightly Libertarian. I don't have strong political beliefs I'm assuming because I didn't stray all that far from the very middle...
Activity 2
Sometimes it is not possible to get two things you wish your nation to have because they cannot balance. Like putting up a stiff policy for crime and keeping all civil rights.

NationState shows how hard it would be to run a country. You have to take in many different things such as economy, civil rights, and political freedom. As well you need to be aware of taxation and the crime rates.

There were alot of pointless questions that werent really necessary though.

Part 1

"Under capitalism, man exploits man.
Under communism, it's just the opposite."
J.K.Galbraith

I found that my ideals correspond with that of a liberal-leftist which would compare to Gandhi and Nelson Mandella. Though I’m only slightly over to the Liberal side and mostly on the line I do believe that people’s rights and freedoms should not be dismissed by authoritarianism. On the other hand, there are areas where the government needs to step in. Canada is too large of a country to be ran by man. Power corrupts and total power corrupts totally, therefore, power should lie equally with citizens and the government.

Part 2
I learned a great deal about the different methods of sorting nations by politics, economy and values and came to the conclusion that it is almost impossible to make all three balance. Industry suffers if there is too much government control and if there isn’t enough government control people are exploited. It is difficult to decide between total anarchy and poverty. The final outcome of the country is what the politicians decide for it, and in democracy, these politicians are held responsible by the citizens.
