U.N. Interventions

Ever since the Suez Crisis Canadians have taken pride in looking at themselves as the world's Peacekeepers.  Over the years this has meant that Canada has been invo9lved in some very important U.N. missions while also being part of some misguided failed interventions.  Recently this has lead Canadians to question our role in international affairs and our support for the United Nations.

However, before we can understand were we are going we need to have a clear look at where we have been.

Task:  Visit the following link and read the CBC article History of UN Interventions. and read through the list of U.N. sanctioned interventions.  Find one mission that Canada was part of and research our involvement.  Leave a comment on this page summarizing your findings.  Be sure to include the date, location and reason for the mission.  Include and details you can find about Canada's involvement, number of troops, role etc., and if the mission would be considered a success or not.

UNAMIR
In 1993 to 1996, Canada sends a contingent to the mission in Rwanda. It is lead by General Romeo Dallaire with a force of 5500 multi-national troops, 300 of them being Canadian. The reason of this mission was to supervise the warring Tutsi and Hutu population and troops were given 6 months to protect refugees and stop the fighting. The mission is viewed as a total failure because 800,000 Rwandans die. Not only did Rwandans die but the UN also lost some respect for keeping peace. The project was called United Nations Assistance Mission in Rwanda and Canada participated from 1993 to 1996 providing support. R.F.

Peacekeeping Force: 1964 to now
During the crisis between the Greek and the Turish people, there was a dispute aboutthe island of Cyprus. The Greeks wanted the island to join Greece and the Turs wanted to divide the island. So the Canadian forces were sent to maintain the buffer zone between the greeks and the Turks. This conflict has been lasting for over 29 years and is still going with over 25000 troops , with 58 contingents serving onthe island. In 1992 the Canadian government decided to withdraw the Canadian Battalion from Cyprus. It all ended in September 1993. C.P.
