Exploring your political views

Read the following instructions and complete the two activities. These were developed by a friend of mine, Mr. Thielmann, over at DP Todd.

Activity One

Purpose: find out what kind of political views you have and how they compare with world figures and political parties

Instructions:
go to http://www.politicalcompass.org/
read the instructions and complete the quiz
read through your results page to learn about your views
summarize what you learned from the quiz by commenting in response to this posting on the course blog -- http://www.soc11eh.blogspot.com

Tips:
left vs right: left-wing usually means more government control over industry and economy; right-ring usually means less government regulation and intervention (laissez-faire)
authoritarian vs libertarian: authoritarian means powerful government which controls rights and freedoms, sometimes it can be a dictatorship; libertarian means less government control of rights, sometimes less government in general

If you finish activity one and have time try activity two.

Activity Two

Purpose: learn about different ways of organizing nations by politics, economy, and values

Instructions:
go to http://www.nationstates.net
read the introduction and sign up to “build” your nation
experiment with the simulation for as long as you need to see how it works, more if you have the time (warning: NationStates can be addictive!)
summarize what you learned from the simulation by commenting on this posting on the course blog -- http://www.soc11eh.blogspot.com

Tips:
See how the choices you make at the beginning affect the kind of country which is generated by the simulator. Look at other countries and issues around the “world” to see what others have done.

I have learned that i am happy with the way things are because the dot was basically in the middle of the graph. But i would like a little bit less power in the government.

I learned that I am close to the middle of the graph, but closer to communism and anarchism. I do believe that we should treat everyone the same no matter how much money they have or where they come from.

I learned that I am slightly to the left of the middle of the graph. That is where i assumed I may end up so I am happy with my result.

I learned that I am similar to well-known peaceful characters, yet leaning towards being at the top that so not too much like Ghandi but not too unlike him either.

I was most like Ghandi. I don't think this is accurate at all. I think this because I would be horrible in government. He was a great man. I think I would be a dictator. I have created the Dictatorship of Knavery. The government is psychotic. Our animal is the beast. And our people are evil. (I'm not a satanist!!!)

My results were pretty accurate i think. I ended up on the lower right side which was close to Ghandi. I was more government and social. I think i could have been also up in the independant rights area, but I believe it was pretty accurate.

I learned that i'm apparently really far down and to the left, which means that I support the group and care about others opinions as well. I'm pretty happy with where I am because I thought that was where I would be.

My civilization was rich with equality and personal freedoms, which is good but we were also not a very influential country. I think that it is impossible for any goevernment to be perfect but the pursuit of perfection is an admirable quality in a government.

I ended up just below the line dividing authoritarian and libritarian. My focus is more towards the left side meaning the government needs more control over industry and economy. This means that i care about everyone but like order. This is pretty accurate analysis for me that is how I am. The closest person that scored the same was Gandhi. Based on the results i should probable vote for the NDP because there ideals support me better

I learned that I am between communism and anarchism. I believe it's fairly accurate and the well being of the group is better than that of the individual.

I was very happy with my famous comparison and happy with my placement on the graph but I do not totally agree with everything that I apparently represent. Perfection in a government is impossible but the pursuit of perfection is an admirable quality.

I am closest to the green party which is neat because I actually like the green party alot. I beleive government is important but the people should have a say in what goes on and the government should be trying to help the land and the people not only in Canada but in other countries too.

My results show that I am closest to Pope Benedict XVI. I feel that there needs to be rules but still freedom for the people. The closest party I am to is the Bloc Quebecois. I agree with my results.

Activity 1

With this activity it said I was an left-winged Liberalist. Throughout the quiz there were definately things which made you thing about the answer carefully. Most of my answers were based on rights of the people, but that government should play an important role in people's lives to some extent. It shouldn't be that they are telling you how to live your lives in a certain way type thing. One the chart is says I would be more New Democratic Party. I strongly agree with that in that I feel that the opinion of the people is very important, compared to whether or not the government has control.

I am closest to Ghandi on the graph and am happy that I am not a fascist like Hitler. I learned that I agree with most human rights, and am not like any of our system of government.

Economic Left/Right: -1.88
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -1.49
I landed on the green square(left libertarian). I am very similar to Ghandi and have the similar beliefs as the New Democratic Party. I agree i am pretty much the same as Ghnadi. I think this is accurate. I learnt that i believe in peace and human rights. I also learnt that i am would consider all other areas on the map, since i am very close to the middle.

On the political compass i was located in the middle, but also a little to the left wing and down. The person who i was closest to is Gandhi, so my views are Libertarion; tradition is important, governments should only be there for improvements, and law and order are only important to protect ther rights of individuals.

I was closest to Gandhi, and I think this is an accurate assessment. I know of him to be a peaceful man, and I find that I am more along those lines then some of the other paths. I believe in Socialism, that it should be about the people.

My nation had superb political freedom, developing economy and some civil rights.
Compared to other developed nations, my country has good rights and beleifs although it is a tyranny by majority. One psychotic dictarorship has a greater tax. Their youth crime is completely unknown whereas mine is relatively low. And my private sector, a very tiny part is dominated by Uranium Mining.

I learned that I am a libertarian leftist, slightly more libertarian than Gandhi but about as far left as him, about the same as the Dalai Lama. I think this is fairly accurate, because this means that I believe the government have control over economic and industrial issues, but less control of rights (or less government), which I do agree with. I just think that the control government should have over economy should only be based upon the needs and opinions of the people.

The quiz said that I am most like Gandhi. I believe that I'm along these lines because based on what I know about Mohandas Gandhi, I have agreed with his views and peaceful nature. I also believe in socialism, and that the people are more important that the corporation. We would all take well to learn a lesson or two from Gandhi and his views. The reason I'm pleased with the results is because Gandhi does not do what politicians do - say that a certain issue should change and come up with a solution that they later say is impossible. Gandhi was an inspiration, he lead people with realistic morals and goals which he didn't just "preach to the choir", but also lived by himself. He is truly one of the most inspiring people in history.

I learned that I am closer to the right but fairly close to the middle. I am also slightly towards libertarian. I believe that this quiz is correct and sort of reflects who I am. My parents are business people and I could see how I am closer to the right side of the spectrum. I was about as right as Hitler but he was high up and I was lower down. That however still scares me :O.

My Country was called The Republic of Harjas and was a very economically strong country but had few civil rights. Our slogan was “Work Hard and We will Work Hard for You!” I sort of like the country because I would like the people of my country to be based on what they do individually and the government not hampering their achievements. And I also like it because it treats criminals badly, which I feel Canada needs to do more of. I wish it had more civil rights however for the deserving people of the country. Our national animal was the Tiger.

I learned that I am more to the right which probably makes sense because I believe in free enterprise and more power for the individual. I also believe in change to systems which are not working and female rights which would probably explain why I was more center right. There weren't any famouse political people who I was close to so I guess I will have to carve my own path.

After seeing the pictures, reading the novels, and watching the documentaries I naively believed that those atrocities could never possibly happen again. This belief stayed with me until one fateful day when Mr. Lewis showed us the documentary of the genocide in Darfur. I couldn't believe my eyes that once again the world was watching genocide and simply being a bystander. Although the tactics are different the idea is the same-exterminate a group. Why do we take socials and grill our students with history if not to protect the world from past atrocities and learn from our past mistakes. When future generations look at what our generation has done will they be proud of us? I think that if we simply do nothing about Darfur then we will be just another generation of bystanders and be just as useless as the past Canadians. We should be the new wave of "do something" people and fight for those who truly need our help. We have the power to save lives and with our knowledge of past genocides we should be able to defeat evil. I think that like all terrible things that happen to people the initial result leaves people determined and willing to change, but as time goes by people fall into their old habits, I believe we can do better. We can be the change.
