The People's Voice

Election Day is upon us and BC, or at least 30% of the eligible voters, are heading to the polls to decide on who should lead us into the next decade and through some of the biggest challenges we have faced in over half a century.

http://www.nodice.ca/elections/britishcolumbia/

As this will be the last time you are forced to sit on the sidelines through an election inquiring minds want to know where you stand.

Task: Visit the following links and do some research (reading) on the various provincial parties and their platforms in order to gain an understanding of the choices voters have. Who do you support, who seems to represent your point of view?
Research the Parties
http://www.studentvote.ca/bc/student/learn.html (click on the parties tab to visit the party websites)

Explore some of the issues and take note of how the different parties stand on the issues that matter to you. What are the big issues for you? Does how a party stand on an issue affect your opinion of them?
Examine the Issues

Who do you support? Who do you think represents your point of view?I support the liberals, because they are about giving money to schools. They plan to turn a bunch of colleges into universities, and put funding into them as well. They are also giving 4 million to children’s playgrounds which promotes healthy living. They also match the donations made to the raise-a-reader foundation every year, which I think is important.

What are the big issues for you and does a party stand on an issue affect your opinion of them? The most important issue for me is what they are going to do to help us, the students. The green party and the NDP web pages fail to say anything about students, and where they would stand if their government came to power. The liberals give money to fund important things in schools, and are taking responsibility for student success.

Do you think the media is unbiased and fair in their reporting? Do the media items change your mind about who you support?I don’t think that they are unbiased, because they seem to bash everyone equally. But I don’t think that they should be reporting every single little detail of a candidate’s life. True, candidates shouldn’t be posting their private life on facebook, twitter and other things that because they know that the news will find it. But the media should have a certain respect for privacy. The average citizen will party, and post dumb pictures on the internet, so don’t we want to know that the people we are voting for are just like us? Media items, if used to bash the candidate, do not change my opinion on the candidate themselves. I just think it’s wrong that the media can openly bash people and take away their privacy.

Would you vote yes or no on the Single Transferable Vote?I would vote no on the single transferable vote because I think that our first past the post system works just fine. We don’t need to complicate things for citizens when we already have a fine working system.

How do support, who seems to represent your point of view? The green party seems to represent my views more. They are concerned about the environment and want to save our planet. They understand the oil peeks and prices. They would remove the carbon tax which seems to be doing nothing to help the environment. It’s just making it harder for families to go. David Suzuki also supports him and he is supposed to be the smartest man in our lifetime. The NDP also somewhat shares my view because they are more for the workers then for the businesses and business owners.

What are the big issues for you and does a party stand on an issue affect your opinion of them?My big issue is the environment and what we are doing to protect it. I am also concerned about the economy and jobs. That is what affects my opinion on the green party because they know the environment and their name and logo seem to reflect it

Do you think the media is unbiased and fair in their reporting? Do the media items change your mind about who you support? Yes the media is unfair. They report on bad things the party leaders have done so that peoples minds would change. They give the parties they want to win a better story or review then they would to the other ones. If the media reports on something that has happened recently, like one of the runners got their license revoked because they were dui, then my vote would defiantly be swayed.

Would you vote yes or no in support of the Single Transferable Vote? I would probably vote yes on the STV because it makes it easier for people and more people would probably vote.

I am choosing the sex party because no other political parties are supporting what I want. This party is ridiculous but some of the things the Sex Party talks about actually do make sense. Scientific studies show that orgasms have many health benefits. This means the more pleasure in your life, the better and longer you may live. Gangsters express their hormones through violence. Sexual activity is a much healthier way of getting rid of male energy. The Sex Party supports the fact that men convicted of gang offenses should have mandatory orgasm-testing. The gang members should have a minimum of two climaxes a day or go back jail until their sentence is up. Although I don’t agree with the legalization of marijuana the Sex Party believes that it improves erotic pleasure and should be honored as our provincial flower.

I would say that the Green party supports me the most with similar points of view about the environmental concerns. They want a sewage treatment place put into place to help clean our environment.

They said they would lower income tax yet raise it for businesses that cause pollution. It seems as thought they are more focused on keeping our province healthy and eco friendly. I also like the fact that they are preventing genetic modification in our food because ultimately its not good for us in the long run people are getting sick from. David Suzuki also supports the green party because they promise change that would do better for our province.

Our present government has favored over large corporations that extract resources against the wishes of local citizens, the Green Party claims they will put a end to this “bullying”

If I was able to vote today I would vote for Carole James, and the NDP. I would vote for her because she wants the everyday person to have a job and not be stuck at home because of the people whose jobs were taken away, and then they are the ones who will be living on the streets because they have no job to support their family. She cares for the elderly senior citizens and she wants them to have a home for them to go to after they can’t live at home, because they are getting to old. She wishes to fix the health care system, so that every day person can have health care who don’t have it because of the job they have.
I think that the media change the views of some of the candidates so that it makes it looks like that the other parties are doing a much better job in what their doing to support the people of the province of British Columbia.

I have two that I support one party I support is the Green party I love there ideas to help the environment. Although right now I feel the best party to help the economy are the BC Liberals. The BC liberals talk about so many ideas/plans that people need unlike the Green party who are talking about some really important issues that people aren’t worried about. BC isn’t worried about the environment they are worried about money. I feel that BC needs to focus on the issue of the economy and BC Liberals is the party willing to fight this battle. I think that yes media is a big part on how you look at a party, as much as I would love to say that I wouldn’t listen to the media because I think it is unfair. But pretty much anyone would listen and follow the media because we all want to know the truth. The thing with media though is they make it sound way worst then it actually is.

I support the B.C. Liberals because I think they have done a good job in the last eight years in getting our economy back on track from when the NDP ran it into the ground. The Liberals have good tactics in seeing that we cannot do all of these wonderful things that the green party and the NDP have in mind for our province if we have no money to fund them. Also, in these very hard economic times is it important that we have a provincial government that is focused on keeping our economy afloat so that we can keep as many jobs and job opportunities in British Columbia.

Big issues for me would have to deal with crime. I want to know that the party I’m representing has the same opinion as me on how to handle certain offenders and deal with certain cases. The way a party stands on an issue can definitely affect my opinion on them. For example a party who wants to legalize pot is not an option in my books.
I feel that sometimes the media can be very biased, no matter what the facts are the reporter has their opinion and they try to work that into their story. Media isn’t fair in my opinion because even when they get a story up front it doesn’t mean that they know the true facts that are kept hidden. Depending on what the media is saying, my mind can be changed. Media, no matter how wrong, can be very intriguing and make your mind go to another place.

Who do you support? I would most likely vote for the Liberal Party because from what little I know about all of the parties, I think the Liberals seem as if they are trying hardest to make a change.

Who seems to represent your point of view? I don’t think any of the parties represent my exact point of view because I will never agree with every exact thing that the parties exemplify.

What is the biggest issue for you, and does a party stand on an issue affect your opinion of them? The big issue for me is the NDP leader trying to increase minimum wage. Although I would probably support the Liberals, I do like what the NDP is trying to do with this.

Do you think the media is unbiased and fair in their reporting? I think that the media can be very biased. They may not necessarily be biased about the elections but I do believe that the media can be extremely unfair.

How do support, who seems to represent your point of view?

i think that the b.c. marijuana party represents my point of view.
Really its used for medical reasons and its not as bad as other drugs.
It can help people with stress, cancer, and chronic pain I think that many people would benefit from this party if they were elected.
It also seems that this party would have a good amount of support if more eligible voters voted because I think there are a lot of marijuana smoking people in b.c. besides British Columbia has the best bud in the world.
They also have a good reason for joining the election campaign it doesn’t seem that the government pays enough attention to gang violence they are more concerned about grow ups and busting small time marijuana dealers.

I’d also think that the green party represents my point of view because they are all about making b.c. the best it can be environmentally because we are destroying the natural beauty and resources with our urbanization and pollution. I like their idea of lowering income tax for normal working class people and raising taxes for big businesses that do most of the major polluting.

What are the big issues for you and does a party stand on an issue affect your opinion of them?
Some big issues for me are the environment, healthcare and education. Our government now is trying to make our learning curriculum the best of the best but still special needs children seem to be overlooked sometimes and I would like the education to improve as I get older because I want my children to be successful and I think that we spend to much time in school I mean to many years. Like in elementary school you just learn the simple basics of all the subjects and you spend 8 years doing that and you get to high school and look at all that you learnt in elementary school compared to now and it seems to be that we learn to little there in the amount of time we spend there. The environment is also a big concern because we are destroying our natural resources slowly so pretty soon we wont have good quality food and have to wear masks cause we cant even breath our oxygen. And yes how a party stands on certain issues does affect my opinion of them because it shows what they care most about.

Do you think the media is unbiased and fair in their reporting? Do the media items change your mind about who you support?

I don’t think they are very fair they try to put things out there to change your mind and opinions and make a politician look bad so they don’t get votes, they try to make you lean more towards there opinions and point of view of things. Sometimes they can sometimes they reveal some good and bad things that catch my interest and make me think more about my opinions but I don’t necessarily change them.

Why I want to vote Green... their platform represent the kind of society I'd like to live in: sustainable development, just and caring society, protection of resources for future generations.

Why I don't want to vote Green... under our current system it would be a vote for an ideal, but not a vote that could elect in my riding where strategy is important.

Why I want to vote Liberal... I think the carbon tax is a good start for dealing with CO2 emissions, and their promise (which is just a promise) to negotiate treaties is the right thing to do.

Why I don't want to vote Liberal... the run-of-river projects are scary, sounds like a resource sell-off, Gordo and the rest are capitalism crazy. The education minister is out to lunch and she represent my riding. The scandals don't help either.

Why I want to vote NDP... best chance to stop-and-think on the run-of-river projects, best chance to change my local representative. Balance of capitalism and socialism.

Why I don't want to vote NDP... screechy campaign, focused on bad liberals and head-in-the-sand on the carbon tax. Bad memories of Glen Clark (bring back Barrett).

Why I want to support the STV... provide better electable choices, represent a larger and more diverse voice in legislature. Cool election result to break down with a Socials class.

Why I don't want to support the STV... might mess with local representation, esp. for rural areas (although this is a problem now, too).

Who do support, who seems to represent your point of view?

I support the Sex Party. Not because of anything they share in there opinions, but simply because they are so absurd, I don’t have any confidence in any of our other Parties that are running.
This should come as a slap in the face to each opposing parties. Anyone willing to vote for a Sex party, rather than the liberals, or any other party is really showing a stand.
Other than that, I don’t share any opinion.

I would vote for the Liberal Party because they are very big supporters of business and strengthening our economy. One of their main focuses is to help universities educate students so that more job opportunities can be opened up, especially in the health care area. Because of the global economic downturn it is very important to have a political government who are able to keep our province prosperous and our economy growing.

I support the NDP’s because I really like what Carol James is doing for BC. I really like that she wants to raise the minimum wage, end homelessness, and protect our hospitals and schools. She also wants to stop off-shore drilling and save our rivers from privatization. So for those reasons I say Vote for Carol James!

If I were legal to vote in the provincial election I would most likely vote for the Reform party. The issues they discuss make sense to me and involve the future of BC. They want to inform the people of what is happening in BC and how they want to help solve the issues. They want a more independent BC. Letting the people make BC the place they want to be. They want to reform and restructure the provincial government and create a new BC. For me they just seem the best option among all the other parties. They target the issues that I think of the most and none of the other parties, in my mind, seem to come close. The other parties are crooks in my mind.

If I were legal to vote, I would vote for the Green Party of B.C. In recent times the population seems to be more and more worried about our environment and the problems of global warming. The obvious solution to the growing environmental problems in my opinion would be to elect a party that is for fixing our Earth while we can. If we do indeed only have a limited time to reverse the effects of our constant pollution it’s a good idea in my opinion to vote green.

An issue that is important to me is the issue of B.C.’s economy. Over the years it seems to be only getting worse. The Green Party supports this issue by stating that “a healthy economy depends upon a healthy environment”. The Green Party said that they have a plan to kick start the economy by shifting taxes to discourage polluting businesses and encourage eco-friendly jobs. I think they have a lot of good ideas and plans for making our Earth a better place to live.

I think the media is unfair in their way of portraying the candidates. Whenever a media source finds the smallest piece of dirt on a candidate it seems they flip it all around to try and make you understand unknown reasons for why you shouldn’t vote for that party. Even other parties in the elections try to show the party they don’t like as being a very bad option so that we, as voters, rethink our ideas and vote for them.

Plus I don’t have enough knowledge about the other parties but I know they take things way to seriously. I believe the sex party covers most of my views and would make common life more enjoyable, less stressful and serious.

I, as a future voter, will choose to vote for the Work Less Party of British Columbia. I will do this not because I agree of the platform taken by the party, but because I don’t believe in other parties ideas. The Liberal Party, for example, promises to “develop a new fencing program that will protect livestock along the province’s highways and railway corridors.” This angers me because if I choose to elect a government, I don’t want that wasting my tax dollars on fences for animals. That should be the farmers/owners responsablity. Also, I don’t like how Gordon Campbell has an article on his website which insults Carol James. If a government is chosen, they should be elected by their ideas, not by trashing other opponents. I don’t agree with the Green Party because their website appears to be too happy-go-lucky. If they were serious about issues, the website would be more impactful and straight to the point. I don’t agree with the NDP because the leader, Carol James, wants to close down mining. With the forest industry almost gone in BC, there will be even more jobs lost in BC if the mining is shut down.

Who do you support? Who do you think represents your point of view? I am for the Green Party, they may not advertise all of the attractive wage increase and tax decreaseing ideals of the others, but The Green seem to come at problems with a very intelligent and profound way to keep the world beautiful around us and at the same time revising and improving our governmental system. I completely support The Green Party and believe strongly that they are the ones to lead B.C.

What are the big issues for you and does a party stand on an issue affect your opinion of them? For me the important issues are the ones that revolve around the environment and what we are doing to keep it clean and manipulation free. The Green Party are solid on these issues and are fighting for what is just to the people and the world that supports them all.

I support the green party because they’re all for making the world a better planet. Today we are having many issues with the environment and if we don’t act now our children could be in immediate danger. They would shift taxes to discourage pollution and make the world a better place for everyone. We would all be a lot healthier and we might get the initiative to keep our planet less polluted. The green party is exactly what I want our world to become. Everything they want, I want to. I am all for making the world a healthier and safer place for everyone. I don’t think the media is fair for doing what they do, they report anything! Anything the see they would report, I don’t think we should believe the media for anything. The media does not change my mind on who I support, because I don’t believe the media, they basically make up everything they say and do. GO GREEN PARTY!

People believe we need change, for both the economic and environmental issues. I believe that to do so, we need to vote for a new party, one that might be able to satisfy these needs, such as the Green Party.
As stated, the environment and economic issues are the most important, in that order. By creating more ecofriendly jobs and supporting local businesses we can help our economy and environment, and shifting tax money to the issue of trash disposal is also ideal.
Media, on the other hand, is a factor that may never change. For myself, the use of media doesn't distract me from the issues, and shouldn't deter a person from their planned goals

The Green Party because they want to change the world. They want more jobs, a better environment and sustainable growth. They want to create different ways of energy that won’t pollute the world.

What are the big issues for you and does a party stand on an issue affect your opinion of them?

One of the big issues for me is that they want to help the environment. They want o find different ways to create energy without polluting the air. The Green Party wants to reduce are carbon footprint and they want to minimize the environmental impact of mineral, oil, and gas extraction.

Do you think the media is unbiased and fair in their reporting? Do the media items change your mind about who you support?

Yes, I think he media is unfair because they find little things that are bad about them and make a big deal about it. They always find something wrong with their leader and try to convince people not to vote for them. The media does have some affect on peoples minds because they try to convince people that they are a bad party, but it depends on the peoples opinions of who they want to vote for.

I support the green party. They represent my views on:
-strengthening our environment
-caring for one another
-protecting resources and environment
-reforming gov’t
-promoting people to donate

What are the big issues for you and does a party stand on an issue affect your opinion of them?

The big issues for me that i suppost for changes are:
- more jobs
- Sustainable growth
- green investments
-Healthy, vibrant, well-educated communities
-a society that cares
-end homelessness.

Do you think the media is unbiased and fair in their reporting? Do the media items change your mind about who you support?

The media prtrays the green party as a group of pot heads that only want to make weed legal, this is very untrue. On the green party's website there is hardly a mention on this topic. The main concers of this party is the enviroment and the community.

I am not a person that listens to the media for my information. I look at the partys close up and see what the issues they are focused on. A picture of them doing something nice is NOT going to make me vote for them. I willvote for the party that best supposts my interest and concers.

We feel that the appropriate party to vote for is the liberal party. It has been our party for quite a while now, it would be a safe decision that way there isn’t a drastic change. They bring together businesses and leaders, with an economy that is falling we believe that its very important that we look at what businesses have to offer and our economy should be number 1. Also they have good health care and safe communities are very important to them, gangs are becoming a problem now a days so this would also be very important for people of our age and the kids of the future. However the media is always putting this party down yet we seem to stick to them year after year, I don’t think that this year will be very different. Many people voice their opinions but don’t stick by them. This doesn’t change our opinion because, things wont change because they haven’t for a long time now, we cant really change anything nor will we!

I accede with the prepositions offered by the "sex party", the ability one can possess to freely satisfy one's urges in public strongly allures me. In addition, I believe that a significant contribution is attributed to Global Warming by excess shopping done by those who must find an alternative to fulfilled during the day. To add, a major increase in the employment for this particular subject will be increased for jobs such as: socials workers, erotic pleasure specialists etc. The sole fact that crime percentage has the potential to decrease due to the legalization of marijuana will have a colossal impact on citizens optimism and their view on life.

If I were able to vote, I would be voting in favor of the Liberal Party. This party is focused on building confidence and stabilizing our economy. Their five major interests are in improving health, education, jobs and the environment. Their platform is based on strong leadership and a stable government, which is very important since we are experiencing an economic recession. Investing in jobs and infrastructure will create more jobs and put money back into our economy. Also, lowering costs on our economy, while improving and protecting vital public services, as well as living within our means will help ensure that the people of our province are once again confident in our economy and are able to contribute to a stronger British Columbia. The Liberal Party best represents my point of view because they are interested in improving health and education and their overall focus is on strengthening the province's economy.

Who do you support? Who do you think represents your point of view?

I support the green party, because I am for 'going green'. I believe that at this stage in our lives we need to start doing somthing about the world we live in. I think that health care, helping the worlds pollution and conservation of dieing species is somthing that should definatly be supported and taken care of before tragedy strikes us in such a way, we can not control it.
There is no paticular person in which i support, i just support the party in general.

What are the big issues for you and does a party stand on an issue affect your opinion of them?

Im big on conserving the earth, some say that there is no point and that the earth isnt deteriorating. But in hind site, who cares, the world has to be effected some time from our pollution and destruction, and treating it with the kindess it deserves can do nothing but good.
I believe that recycling our resources and solar powered cars, houses etc. Is the way to really get things done.

Do you think the media is unbiased and fair in their reporting? Do the media items change your mind about who you support?
The media does not always state the facts, they state the opinions. And opinions dont always match the truth, or views of others. Everything has its down fall, and I do tend to agree that the Green Party is possibly having to high of motivations, with to little of time, and to little of funds. Im sure in the long run it will have great success, but during our economic crisis. Needs, comes before Wants.

Would you vote yes or no on the Single Transferable Vote?

I believe I would, I think that the green party has quite a bit of potential, and could do great things, as opposed to bringing us down. As long as they are conservative with their funds etc. Then there should not be a problem. Just be reasonable.

Who do you support? Who seems to represents your point of view?

I support the BC Liberals, because they had done a fantastic job in the past eight years and I believe they will continue to do good in the future years. They believe that, in order to create a good society for people, jobs and a steady economy is necessary, thus they continue to create jobs and opportunities for people in our communities. Therefore, I think the Liberals party will manage our economy, and lead BC through these turbulent economic times. During the time of the global recession, such party with a strong belief in bringing back the province’s economy to normal will be significant. As well as retrieving the economy, the liberals also striving for improvement and protection on vital public services in B.C. The health care funding issue, which is a controversial topic in our society, is especially one of the main goals the Liberal party concerns. They promised to increase the investments in healthcare. They also promised the health spending across government will be $8 billion more or 86 per cent higher in 2011/12 than the NDP’s last full year in office. I prefer having a government concerns about the economy and the public services, as a result, I will choose the B.C. Liberals.

The way I believe I should vote is independent. The people who are independent have no other ties; they truly want to further the province. They care not who has more “dirt”, or influence they care for the people. I may not vote of a leader but I will vote for someone who will represent me and my region. The most important thing for me is a candidate who is for the people without constraints. This is particularly true when considering the size of the riding. To me an independent is the best chose for Northern BC.

If I was able to vote I am not sure who I would vote for, but I do know that I would not vote for the NDP. Yes, raising minimum wage would be a good thing for workers but with the economy the way it is, many employers will have to cut jobs. They would not be able to afford it. Independent experts estimate that the wage increase could cost 50,000 jobs. A tax on log exports could also cause thousands of job losses in rural areas and living in northern BC that is not a good thing. During campaigns it is common to hear political parties talk badly about other parties but Carole James was the worst for bashing parties, especially the Liberals. I'm not saying that I support the Liberals but I would choose them over the NDP.

If I voted, I would vote for the B.C. Liberal party, because it seems that they must know what they are doing since they’ve been elected so many times. Also seeing the increasing number of seats they won in the B.C. politics, it is reassuring to know that they are trying to prove that we are a part in this country. I find that the issue of Liberals backing the Fraser Institute was an interesting point because although many other parties think that this is unfair punishment to some schools, I find that annual report cards are a good way to show your child that grades are important. I really like the fact that we get report cards, because then I know that I can improve and work harder next time. They are a useful tool for parents and I find that the Liberals were right to back it. The liberals have a nine percentage point lead over NDP in the poll; they’ve also been hitting all the cultures of people in B.C., which is a great way to boost their advantages against opposing parties. The liberals have also even open the eyes of people, by promising cheaper transit passes for post-secondary students, I find that his ideas and reflections upon B.C. will lead them to the top once again.

In the end, I would vote ‘NO’ to the Single Transferable Vote because it would break down political barriers in B.C. Also, I think that since it’s a system designed for political scientists and mathematicians, and not for voters, many people would be mad and this would probably lead to other multiple problems in the province.

Who do you support, who seems to represent your point of view?
I strongly support the NDP party because I feel that Carol James is going to help with the betterment of British Columbia. She is not only trying to improve BC’s industries, but also the quality of life for many. It is very important that people’s values of life are just as considered as the economy. Carol James is trying to help the unfortunate make ends meet. By her attempting to do this she is also raising the minimum wage to ten dollars an hour which I think will greatly help many people. She is trying to get people out of dead end situations and end homelessness. It may look like she isn’t focusing hugely on the economy, but by helping people it will improve life overall. She is concerned with the care of elderly and wishes to improve health care for the citizens of B.C.

I support the Green party because they have the most similar points of view about the environment with me. They have the idea of clean our pollution. They will have some policy of help us protect our future.

They said that they raise the tax for businesses that cause pollution, and they also will lower income tax. That will be a good way to protect our environment. This issue affects my opinion of them.

The media is not unbiased and fair in their reporting. It is because they only give better information for the parties, which they want them to win. Although they cannot give information for everything, they need to give all of these parties a same base. The media items do not change my mind, because I only support the party that has the same opinion with me.

I will support the STV, because it is the right to vote in my mind. If we only choose the party witch get the most vote, which has no more than 50%. It means most people do not support them. But if the STV appear that would change.

If I had to vote for a political party in British Columbia, I would vote for the B.C Refederation Party. I kind of liked the Western Canadian Concept party, that was, until I saw the separatist ideals. I like a lot of their other ideas, but separation = big no no. I don’t want B.C to be the new Quebec, even if I really would like to “stick it to the man”. The Refederation party gives me a bit of both worlds; less of the government interfering in my government operated life and more freedom to be, less rulebook, more guidelines.
